This Date In History - 1883 - The Phantom of the Opera was born! Well, the actor who famously portrayed the character in the classic 1925 silent film - Lon Chaney, Sr. was born on this date in 1883 that is. Chaney would go on to be remembered as one of the classic Universal Monsters. Here's a classic 1960s button Hake's Americana & Collectibles has for sale that features Chaney's Phantom! Check it out!

Hey everybody,

We know it's been a while since we've post anything new here at the Universal Monster Army, but we've been pretty busy getting our latest auction together. The auction is now online now and open for bidding and we thought we'd share some of the great vintage monster and horror collectibles that are being offered. We at Hake's have always had a special place in our hearts for monsters and horror and we love offering great pieces to our collector friends. If you're unfamiliar with us, we've been in business since 1967 and have three auctions annually, each with over 200 categories of collectibles, most auctions having 2,500 to 3,000 lots. This auction has just over 2,600 items. Each auction has a selection of monster memorabilia, so there's bound to be something to strike your fancy.

Here's a direct link to the Monsters/Horror section of our auction if you're curious - http://www.hakes.com/search.asp?CategoryCode=204_0&Criteria=&SearchFor=Auctions

Take a look and if you have any questions, please feel free to contact us. Also, be sure to check out our website http://www.hakes.com/default.asp as well as our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/pages/Hakes-Americana-Collectibles/123112042279?ref=hl

We'll be posting more spotlight pics on here (like this Janet Leigh signed Psycho poster) soon for you guys and ghouls to peruse. Stay tuned!

We've got a classic 1960s monster toy in our current auction we many of you may be familiar with - Marx's battery-operated Frankenstein. While this example is being offered without its original box, the toy itself is still in remarkable condition and all functions still work.

Or how about this complete display of Universal Monsters pencil sharpeners from 1964? The complete set was to include Frankenstein (who is depicted on display header), Mummy, Wolfman and "Etta The Ghoul," a female skeleton, though this display has six Wolfman sharpeners, three Mummy sharpeners and three Etta sharpeners with no Frankenstein sharpeners present. Despite this, the display is full/complete and would make for a frightful addition to any monster fan's collection!

I saw the sharpeners on your site, the other day. Really nice looking! A set of Franks would have made it perfect!  :)

Just one Frankenstein (any color) and I would have bid high. Still, a beautiful & worthy addition to any monsterkid's collection.

Indeed. The display could be easily improved (not that it needs it) by purchasing a Frank sharpener separately. They can be had for around $20 or so. The display box is the true rarity here, especially in the nice condition it's in.

Not true.  The Frankenstein sharpener is the real rarity.  There was a warehouse find of the displays a few years ago, they are not especially rare.  If you can find Frankenstein sharpeners for $20, buy as many as you can get your hands on.

That display is from warehouse find...too minty (and note unpunched j-peg hole) to be otherwise. It also explains the lack of Frankensteins.

Ok, Bob, please educate me on this. Why would a warehouse find explain the lack of Frankensteins?

ABG Frankenstein sharpeners for around 20 bucks?! Au Contrare, Monsewer  :D. I've been trying to get one for awhile and they seem to hover around the $400 mark.  :o

Maybe Hake's will offer some for $20 to complete this set.
