I still can't find the Creature--he's being awfully shy. But here are two fellas who aren't shy about showing themselves(I do hope this isn't one of those "things" that Ygor's friend did for him).
Anyway, I used this as a "Ghastly Greetings" Halloween card with the caption:

"Ygor's friend would do almost anything for Ygor--except share his last Fun Size Milky Way bar from his Trick or Treat bag."

Michael Thomas owns this painting. Watercolor again on parchment paper. 4 x 6 in size.

Bela's face is especially well rendered! Great job, Meek!!

Here's the painting that reawakened my interest Universal horror filums--what I call my "Lucky" Renfield.
Renfield was painted in 1999 and is very well traveled--he even spent time with Dwight D. Frye at the Bash a few years ago as part of Dwight's table display. I also used Renfield's eyes as part of the logo for "Dwight Frye Enterprises"--his eyes were exposed by a peeling strip of parchment paper that was rolled back  with the curl of paper ending where the name and address started. Dwight D. loved it but he never got to use it.
Renfield sits on another one of my bookshelves in an Art Nouveau frame, forever watching.

And thanks for the kind words about Ygor & Friend. I've got a few more older painting scans to share that were found while hunting the Creature.

Here's Renfield on the Borgo Pass shuttle off to meet his fate. The still I worked from was rather dark but when I held it up to a bright light I could see Renfield resting his foot on the seat across from him, his briefcase tucked under his folded big plaid coat and the leather interior of the walls of the coach. Sorry for the quality of this image but it is a copy made on photo paper of the original(which was done with the Kodak Picture Maker since I had no access to a scanner at that time--thus the few white specs here and there and the photo has faded a bit in 8 years).
As stated before, I'm convinced that the plaid coat belonged to Dwight Frye(probably purchaed when he lived in New York) since it shows up not only in "Dracula" draped over Renfield's arm, but is worn by him as Wilmer in "Dangerous Female" and turns up again in around 1933 once more folded over Dwight's arm when he was in a stage play in Los Angeles entitled "Vingettes".
This copy sits framed atop another bookcase filled mostly with books about horror movies.

Very atmospheric, Meek. Another fine study in contrasts.

This is my latest, a quick portrait of Bela. I painted this one a little bit different for me: it was done in three one hour sittings, with no prep work, no drawing, just jump right in and paint!

Hope you enjoy it.

Mike: I'm intrigued by your tri-color Lugosi---choice of colors?
I have the Werewolf of London laid out in pencil on my drawing board and if I get my window screen on today I may get in a few licks of painting(I've been chained to work for the last two weeks and too bloody tired to paint once home at night or early in the morning).

Meek, this piece was done for an art "challenge" over on the CHFB. Someone started it by asking artists to either post a previous piece, or create a new one of a given subject for that month. I thought to try something a bit different, and just jump into the painting with no prep drawing, color studies, nothing. I tried to use cool colors for the shadows on Bela's face. I'm not real happy with the way the green turned out: I was trying to go with a more "Sanjulian-style" green. Green has remained my most troublesome color to deal with, for some reason.

This was purely a "what-if?" painting.

That's more than you probably wanted to know...

Nightmares in plastic

#220
Dear UMA members,
These are the most recent pictures I finished....

Bela was done just for fun, Vincent was supposed to be the boxart for the Prepaint statue coming from Amok Time soon.
Unfortunaly MGM (the licensor) was against an Illustration on the box and ordered Photographs of the actual product.

I will  be at Wonderfest this year and offer these (and a bunch of others) as prints on cardboard and canvas as well.
The latter I do on preorder only. Check the Classifieds next week for more info.

Thanks for looking,

Rainer E.

Beautiful work, Ranier! Happy to hear you will be at Wonderfest. So many terrific classic monster artists gathered at one event!

And thanks for the copies of Nightmares In Plastic! Great mag! I gave one copy to David J. Schow, who is a closet model-builder enthusiast. And also thanks for the Rondo Hatton print. Great stuff!

Rainer, your Lugosi has a late 1920's feel to it---rather like some of the illustrations that used to be on lobbycards, inserts and daybills. There's quite a few Lugosiphiliacs out there who'd love to have a copy of this. Vinnie with a red hot poker---his expression contains the wonderful combination of snobbery and disdain. M-G-M's loss is your gain.
