Quote from: Anton Phibes on May 21, 2025, 12:17:18 AMYou know, I have heard several companies (Super7, Hasbro, McFarlane) griping about tariffs. You know who hasn't said a peep about tariffs to the best of my knowledge? NECA. Why haven't they chimed in yet?

All of this caca is overpriced already. Has been for years. People will just buy what they want, and skip what they don't, if things are marked up too richly for their blood. Same as always.  To some folks, this isn't a hobby, it's life to them.  It's why some folks are willing to pay inflated prices for things on ebay, or stay in a perpetual cycle of debt for useless crap. So the tariffs won't affect that demographic much.

Just curious why NECA hasn't said a peep, as they too are small. Maybe they have and I missed it. Or maybe they know it's something they will survive without too much "Chicken Little" drama.

Neca is a pretty large company.    My guess is they have a big enough profit margin,   and sell at such high volume there isn't a need to pass it onto the customer.    At least not yet.    Neca has just as many licenses as Super 7.

Quote from: fearliath on May 20, 2025, 11:34:25 PMHim blaming the tariffs as the primary reasons for those layoffs is disingenuous and sleight of hand. If blaming it all on the boogie man makes the pill go down easier for the people he fired, fine.

That's what I feel is going on.   Esp when a good portion of their customers and online supporters hate the guy also.

I've been in the accounting field all my life.  So I know a thing or 2 about finances, taxes, tariffs, how businesses run, and how they make a profit, etc.  it's a lot more than the average Joe knows or thinks about.

So tariff wars are bad from the get-go.  They hurt everyone.  These tariffs did not go away.  The biggest one, on items coming in from China, is still there, just reduced from 145% to 30%.

BUT that 145% was in effect for around a month, so EVERYTHING that came in from China during that time period had that 145% tariff.

So some toy companies like Hasbro and now Super 7 said they're going to have to increase their prices due to those tariffs (again, tariffs are still in place, tho the China one is down to 30%).  bbts said they're going to have to raise their prices - they aren't a toy manufacturer, BUT they buy from them.

And now Walmart says they are going to have to raise prices.  And the President told them not to and to just eat it.

Well, why did he say that?  Possibly so the American people who buy these don't suffer from sticker shock.  OK, BUT you see, Walmart is a major corporation and they, like all business, are in business to make money.  So Walmart will lose money with these tariffs.  And Walmart isn't just some giant business monster.  You see, they are listed on the stock exchange, and people invest in stocks to make money.

So people looked, saw Walmart making money, and invested in them, so they too make money off the stock if Walmart turns a profit. So if Walmart "eats" the tariffs, that will cut into their profit margin.  The company starts losing money, their stock prices go down (or it go away).  So are investors going to continue investing in a company with dropping or no profits (or losses) or are they going to abandon them and go with a company that is making money?  So, Yes, if Walmart "eats" the tariffs, the consumers won't be hurt, but those investors WILL be hurt.

There was no need for these tariffs.  Our economy was good, and growing.  Could it be better - sure.  But just starting a tariff war wasn't the way to go.  Think China or any other country was unfair putting tariffs on American made products - have talks with that country to work out a deal.  Just jumping in and putting high tariffs just caused our economy to suffer.  The stock market went down the second they were announced and went down further once they went into effect.

Now in most businesses, they can either make a profit, break even, or lose money.  That's how things are in the business world.  But it's funny how some "companies" never lose money.  I live in Florida, and we got hit with hurricanes last year.  The electric company paid a lot of money to do repairs on the power lines and grid.  BUT that would cut into their profit margin.  So they went to the State, and the State allowed them to turn those costs over to the customers, increasing out electric bill until those costs are fully paid for.  So the electric company lost no money, made their usual annual profits, and the customers bills increase.  Thanks State Of Florida!

Profit margins aren't super high in most businesses.  And the cost of manufacturing is only 1 part of it.  You have to pay for the building you're in, storage space, equipment, furniture, electricity, water, taxes, internet, phones, employees, advertising, etc, etc, etc.

So if an item costs the manufacturer $1 to make it in China, and it now has a 30% tariff, that 30% cuts into their profit margin.  That also adds to the cost a business has - now they have to keep records of everything bought from foreign countries, what the tariffs are on those items ("What, they added / changed the tariff - what date does that go into effect?"), and companies then have to process those payments, send them to the government, etc, etc - that's adds to the cost of doing business.

China isn't paying the tariff.  The AMERICAN companies that import these items pay the tariff - again - American companies.  China doesn't really care about the tariffs - they have contracts with American companies to manufacture this stuff.  Often long term contracts.  So in the short term it doesn't affect them at all - you make a contract to have something shipped by a certain date, they do it, you gotta pay them, even if that increases the cost to YOU.

And, as I said, companies are in business to MAKE money, not break even or lose it.  All those business expenses add up.  And companies have to deal with investors, who sure don't want to lose their investments.

S, being in the accounting field, and being in business all my life, I know how tariffs and taxes work.  I know how companies mane money, and how they can lose money.

A tariff war is NOT a good thing for the American people, American businesses, or the economy.  Short turn it's a major pain.  Long turn - look for higher prices on practically everything, stock prices falling, unemployment rising, and profit loss.

TDS - this has nothing to to with the President - it has to do with finances and the economy.  And this tariff war is bad all around.

Quote from: Monsters For Sale on May 21, 2025, 12:50:57 AMI thought these Blind Box Silver Screen figures were retailing for $14.95.

Anywho, I got my Frank from eBay for $19.99 including shipping.  (No unopened box for me.)
They are being sold for $14.99 by Walmart. The product came into the United States prior to tariffs so there should be no increase in the price. If Super 7 were selling them directly they would charge 8% more even though there was never a tariff applied to the product. This illustrates my beef with what Super 7 is doing.
I hate tariffs, they are insanely bad for America. I have no problem if super 7 added the tariff cost to items for which the tariff applied but that isn't what they are doing. Honestly, they probably haven't yet received any tariffed items onshore yet. They're probably still in a boat. Everything they're are gouging in now was already here before tariffs.

With regards to Super7....the only products I found myself buying from them were the Reaction Monsters. Mostly for the super cool artwork by Ed Repka. I did buy their soda pops featuring that art also. I always felt is was a missed opportunity not releasing that art on actual glass drinkware. that would be a huge set of glasses.

They'd rather do stuff like this.   They say sold out but I'm not aware of anyone purchasing them except retailers.
