Title: Movies that you love, but everyone else seems to hate
Post by: general gruesome on June 30, 2013, 05:04:41 PM
- I would have to choose 'The Last Action Hero'

I love the movie, and it's a childhood favorite

I also loved to play the video game of the movie as well

Class of Nuke'em High 3 ...('still have it on VHS, which makes me feel OLD)
Killer Klowns from OuterSpace

all kinds of cheesy B movies

Evil Dead got my wife hooked on horror movies for good and now likes zombie movies, too.

"Killer Clowns" is a pretty popular cult film. I've never seen "Class of Nuke 'Em High 3." I didn't know they went beyond Part 2! I've heard rumors of both "Toxic Avenger" and "Class of Nuke 'Em High" remakes.

Assignment Terror (AKA Dracula Vs. Frankenstein)

This is the Paul Naschy Werewolf entry with Michael Rennie and Karin Dor. Even Naschy fans think this is a real stinker. I love it. The only real aggravation for me is that the vampire is such a puss. The plot is a lot like Plan 9 From Outer Space. Aliens want to use Earth monsters to terrorize the world. Fear and loathing carries great weight in a war. Everyone scoffs but if monsters were real, and alien beings using advanced scientific techniques could mass produce, and control an army of them..... I think human reign would be in big trouble. Nobody laughs off a zombie apocalypse. If humanity were set upon by an army of undead, lycanthropes, and flesh golems, it would be way worse than just zombies. I don't think the acting is that bad, the way some people do. I think it's on a par with most Eurohorror. Michael Rennie turns in a pretty good performance, and the other actors do a fine job. I've even heard people gripe about the title being lame. Assignment Terror strikes me as a cool title. The alternate title, Dracula Vs. Frankenstein, seems like the lame one. It fails to convey the plot purpose.

The two best things about it are 1) Rutger Hauer and 2) the nonstop bloody kills and violence

My Dad NEVER understood why I liked  "monster movies" and I never understood his passion for "cowboy movies"...but we DID "agree to disagree".    We just treated our movies the same way we treated our love of coffee.  He liked his with two spoons of sugar and a lot of cream.  Mine is black as pitch and strong enough to melt the spoon.

I do not like a lot of the movies listed by you all, but I will not say which ones  :)  I will say that I DO like The Last Action Hero.
I am not very opinionated, because my tastes change. But I have family members who get right down peeved at me because of my love for the Nickelodeon Classic- GOOD BURGER. There is something about that movie that reminds me of a time & place in my life that I fondly recollect. I took my kids & nephew to see it in the theater, and I laughed like a crazed hyena! I will watch it anytime- anywhere!  :)  Kenan & Kel are BRILLIANT young comedians/character actors. Abe Vigoda, Sinbad, George Clinton! Anyways...I love it. I also love Sexy Beast starring Sir Ben Kingsley  and Circle of Iron.  These are my private reserve movies that everyone in my family seems to hate.

Moonshadow- You are so right! I also really like that movie, but I have heard nothing but complaints from people when you mention it. I guess people don't like the cast?? I don't know why a lot of people hate it, but I enjoy it every time it comes on. Maybe they are comparing it to the book.

Char - I LOVE "Sexy Beast"! Awesome movie!

I've seen HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN and got a helluva kick outta it!

There's movie called PONTYPOOL (2008) I've watched 3 times on Netflix.  I think it's one of the best films I've seen in the past year or two.  Kind of a creepy, psychological thriller.  I just love it!  Don't know anyone else who's seen it, but my family usually makes fun of me when I speak of it.

What's really weird is the amount of movies that do absolutely nothing for me, but EVERYBODY else in the world seems to worship!  ;D

There are a lot of hairless primates whose only taste is in their mouths.

There are lots of movies I like that the folks around me don't.
Those would include:
Clerks
Dogma
Repo Man
13th Warrior
Beowulf and Grendel
Rare Exports
Dead Snow
Troll Hunter
Blackthorn

Steelyard Blues (1973)
The Butcher (2006) - that I still think has gotta be a spoof
Unholy (2007)
The Rage (2007)

& I really love the two Hellraiser films, Inferno (2000) & Hellseeker (2002)

Forgetting a bunch including lots from Empire & Full Moon...

Are you referring to the semi-animated "Motion Capture" cartoon?
That got pretty good reviews in the States. But I couldn't make myself watch the whole thing.  I felt the same way about the animated comic book--er--"graphic Novel" 300.

There was also a version made in 1999 with Christopher Lambert.  It was more of a post-apocalypse Mad Max vs Grendel movie.  Actually pretty good--despite looking like it was filmed for less than $100.

"Student Bodies".  A trite comedy from (I think) 1981, which was based on fact; that how a lot of horror movies had been released the year before, and none of them lost money.

Yes, the motion capture film, I've actually watched it 2 or 3 times!...but I'm with you on '300', couldn't get through the whole film.

Have to think for a second about this one...

Dr Jekyll & Ms. Hyde (1980's or '90's?)
Neighbors (Comedy w/ Belushi + Akroyd), I should have listed this on another thread
Even Cowgirls Get the Blues (Uma Thurman)
The White Buffalo (Charles Bronson)
Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes (Chrisopher Lambert)
Zardoz (Connery)

Rocky
Rocky II
Rocky Balboa (just a few years ago)
^The pictures in between II and RB were filler to make money and they were all terrible

Myra Breckinridge
Sorcerer (1970's?- it's been a while)
Andy Warhol's Frankenstein & Andy Warhol's Dracula
Rollerball (Original- 1970's??)-- but the remake made a few years ago was terrible
The Bounty (Mel Gibson)
The Avengers (remake of the old TV show)

L L Kong- I've actually met a ton of guys in my life that wouldn't admit to liking Rocky. It may be machismo, not liking Stallone, or whatever... I don't know.
I (myself) think that the first one (Rocky) was brilliant and almost a forgotten classic.

I hear what you are saying- but after the second film the series sank big time and it got quite ridiculous.
The closure, "Rocky Balboa", wasn't a "five star film", but Stallone did do a solid job at finishing off the story.

Another film that I like a lot and folks don't seem to is called Paradise Alley- another Stallone flick.

I'm not a "great big" fan of Stallone, but he did hit the jackpot with his Rocky story.
Title: Re: Movies that you love, but everyone else seems to hate
Post by: long live kong on July 01, 2013, 03:01:07 PM

Haven't seen 'Paradise Alley', I'll look out for it.

I saw an interview with Stallone once about how Rocky got made. Apparently he wrote the screenplay at college or just after, and sat on it for over a decade until he finally got the offer for it which he believed it was worth.
If I remember correctly he wanted to star in the film but was routinely rejected by various studios. He was living in a single room, almost destitute and turned down several offers of a tidy wad of cash for the script. After years of perseverance or just plain stubbornness he finally got his break and the rest is history. A great story of determination and self belief. Talk about life imitating art!

I read the book "Neighbors" before seeing the movie, which turned out to be a mistake. The book is great, whereas the movie was turned into a screwball comedy. It's actually a decent screwball comedy, though. But it bombed so badly, and critics ragged on it so heavily, it's believed that the failure of "Neighbors" heavily contributed to John Belushi's downward spiral and eventual overdose. At the time of his death, he was working on a script titled "Noble Rot," a comedy set in the California wine industry, and the studio was heavily interfering with the screenplay, complaining "We don't want another 'Neighbors!'"

You're not alone liking "Neighbors" -- that was brilliant how they reversed the roles by making Belushi the straight-laced one and Aykroyd the wacko. And Cathy Moriarty was great as Aykroyd's sexy, vampy mate.

It's easier for me to give you a list of films I hate, that for some reason others may enjoy!

Van Helsing
Rob Zombie's Halloween(s)
The Twilight series
Napolean Dynamite

Other than that I may not particularly care for a movie but those are my most hated and I cannot for the life of me understand anyone enjoying anything about them!

I think both Siskel and Ebert liked the movie.  I enjoyed it.  I also liked "Nothing But Trouble", nut wished they had stuck to what was supposed to be the original title for the movie "Valkanavia".  That was the title that the Warner Brothers catalogue said would be the name of the film.

I don't what it is about that film that people hate either. I love it! One of my best friends loves it too, and back when we lived in the same town we'd try to get it shown on movie nights and everyone else would vote us down. Maybe because we both have some nordic roots, we could appreciate the scruffy Viking warriors. But everyone else was like, "Enough with 'The 13th Warrior' already!"

Yes, I agree. This is right around the time that Belushi wanted to go with straight roles and he sort of got one here. He had another just before he passed away, but I don't recall the name of it.
The critics tore this film to shreds, but that doesn't mean a whole lot. Critics are critics- there is always something in a film that they point out and chide.

Ah yes, Halloween III. I think the primary reason that many people hated this movie is because it's title inferred that it would have something to do with Michael Myers, and the film left them feeling disappointed and/or misled. I was originally one of those people but I have actually come to like the film quite a lot; I take the "Halloween" connection away and just think of it as "The Season of the Witch". With Tom Atkins you can't go wrong, and Dan O'Herlihy was terrific as Conal Cochrane.

I loved Brotherhood of the Wolf when I saw it, and was quite surprised by it!

I really loved Halloween III alot too.  Not only did it bend rules at the time by horrible things actually happen to children, almost every Halloween I have that theme song going through my head....

I saw somebody else here mention Connery's Zardoz.  That movie was frickin' awesome.  ;D

I'm really not in tune with what the general public thinks about alot of the weird little movies I like, but I do know I heard alot of backlash about Corky Romano.  I thought it was cute. 0-o

Also, I haven't heard anybody comment or talk about Cabin Fever 2 (the sequel).  I didn't really like the first one at all, too uneven and felt it really missed some good opprotunites, but I LOVED the second weird one.  Totally gross and totally unexpectedly funny.  Loved it.

Shlock.  Wonder why it's never been on DVD?  I remember seeing it in the 70's at sci-fi conventions.   One of them had John Landis talking about the film.  He said, when he was amking the movie, he was going (excitedly) "This is Bad!  This is Bad!"  He said, however as he watched the film he kept going (depressed) "This is bad.  This is bad."  But like "Cannibal the Musical", by Trey Parker, it was a wonderful first time effort by a film maker.

Also, count me in as a fan of "Halloween 3".  I came to the Pacific Theatre to see it on it's first run, and really liked it even then.  Iactually liked the fact that they were planning to continue the series, without Michael Myers, since his story was concluded with Halloween Part 2".  That continuing the Michael Myers character was a mistake, can be seen by the later "Halloween" films, which became less and less watchable as the series "progressed".

Loved it.
Never watched the second, but I loved the first

Jumanji seemed to be popular enough to have a spinoff cartoon series.  I know I kind of liked it.  What I don't know is anybody who hated it.

I hear there's a Jumanji reboot in the works. Or prequel/sequel.

I really liked this film. I have to tried to locate the movie on DVD, no luck.

PS ~ I liked 'Eyes Wide Shut' and thought that the main 'problem' with this flick was that it needed better editing. I would see it again.

1941 was my favorite movie for a while--I haven't seen it for a long time, though. While a lot of story and character details seemed to get lost in editing, it got a lot of the period stuff right, and the costumes, art direction and cinematography were great.

I think I enjoyed it more after reading the comic adaptation that Steve Bissette and Tom (or was it Rick?) Veitch did. Also, ABC showed it in a 3-hour block one Sunday and included some footage cut from the release print; would love to get a copy of that.

I saw Shock Treatment when it was in the theater.
There were about a hundred people when it started--and about thirty when it ended.
I loved it. . .

But then, the same thing happened when I saw Rocky Horror Picture Show and Monty Python and The Holy Grail during their first runs.

Some of my friends quit going to the movies with me because I always picked such bombs.

"Shock Treatment" actually got midnight showings at a LA theatre, and people would perform along with the action on the screen, like Rocky Horror.  I saw it and liked it, but I think if Richard O Brain had been able to do an actual sequel to TRHPS, with the original ast, it would have done better.  What happened was a big strike, caused O'Brain to redo the screenplay to work with the limitations caused by the strike.

2010's "Monsters". Despite its very alluring title, a lot of people hate this film (which was actually shot all digitally) due to its slow, building pace and the fact that the monsters are not in every scene. But in my opinion that's precisely what makes this movie different, excellent and well worth watching. Let's hear what you think...

I like the usually-hated "Neighbors".

But I have to do a little mind trick in order to watch it at all.  I have to filter out the god-awful musical/sound effects score.

The movie is funny.  It looks like the studio was worried that it would not be what the public was expecting and "punched it up" with sound effects and musical cues to let the audience know when they should laugh.  I'm surprised they did not add a laugh track.

The quiet frustration scenes with Belushi in his living room, listening to the clock ticking away his monotonous life should have been allowed to play with no music at all - much more effective.

Someone should re-score this film with a more subtle, understated sound track that matches the tone of the humor in the film.  It could earn a whole new audience and a larger cult following.  A DVD could be released with both soundtracks.

You gotta love Cathy Moriarty as the next door neighbor's slinky wife.  (Hubba freaking hubba!)

_______________________________________________

By-the-way, I also have the same problem with Don Knott's "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken" - a fine kiddie ghost film practically ruined with overdone music and musical cues.

Try watching both with the mindset that the terrible music just isn't there.  Works (sorta) for me.

In all honesty, I haven't seen Neighbors since it was first run in the theatre, but I don't remember being that bothered by the musical/sound effects score.  What I remember was what a great subdued performance by Belushi, and that Ackroyd was great in it.
As far as "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken" is concerned, I have that film, and I'm not bothered by the scoring, since that was pretty much the same in all the Knott's "loser makes good" films he made for Universal during the period.  I also love the theme song of the film, going from scary to a playful sound, reflecting perfectly the film it was intended for.

No problems at all with the performances - Just the music.

It was my feeble attempt at humor.  No one is right or wrong.  This is thread is all about opinion.  I don't expect people to like what I like or for the same reasons.

I think as long as you view it as a one off, a "what if" and not part of teh continuity I think it can be a lot of fun. The scene on the holodeck is hysterical (at least to me).

Same here, and I loved the female android.  The character of Jason honestly never made sense to me, except in the first film, where the idea of Jason surviving turned out to be a nightmare, (Gee, I hope I'm not giving any spoilers here. :P)  If such a being like Jason existed, I can see where a goverment team would want to recover the body to study, and it would no doubt be a huge mistake.

When I first watched this film at a Drive-in, I totally disliked the film. When Jason X was finally released on VHS and DVD
I watched the film again, still, not fully on board. But after a couple more viewings, I started to enjoy Jason X. Now I own the film on Bluray. Go figure. :o

The casting was great - Shelley Duvall was spot on.

The music was awful.  It should have had a 1930's feel to it.  There was not one tune that I went away whistling to myself afterword.  Did any of them stick in your mind? A good musical should leave you wanting to hear at least one or two songs over and over again.

Funny. I agree the music was not very good. However, almost all of them get stuck in my head. That movie is Earworm Central!!
I don't necessarily want to hear the songs again--they just get stuck.

"I'm mean,  I'm mean,  I'm mean, you know what I mean!" has always stuck in my head and I haven't seen the film since its theatrical release!  I also somewhat recall a horrible-out of tune song sung by Shelley Duvall, not really the lyrics but the melody!

The problem wasn't the casting, or even the foorgetable musical numbers.  The problem is Jules Feifer's ponderous story about a son looking for the father he never knew.  Segar and (later) Fleisher did it much better with the "Goon Island" storyline, where Popeye finds his father.  They honestly should have worked with one of Segar's stories, or the Fleisher films (Such as "Aladin" or Sinbad") and would have had a far more entertaining film.

The cartoon story lines were geniusly written, but that was back in the creative thinking era of Hollywood.  The Thimble Theater newspaper strips are still the best Popeye material.

Jumanji seemed to be popular enough to have a spinoff cartoon series.  I know I kind of liked it.  What I don't know is anybody who hated it.

Great flick -- good story and Timothy Bottoms (who I absolutely reviled in the despicable remake of my beloved "Invaders From Mars") plays a great bomber. Plus a wonderful score by Lalo Schifrin, who wrote the famous theme from "Mission Impossible".

I watched Spielberg's "War of the Worlds" again. I think a lot of people hate this film simply because it isn't George Pal's original that we grew up with. In truth, the first time I saw it I wasn't crazy about it (probably for that reason). But as I've watched it again several times, I now think that it's really a great film. Those tripods coming up out of the ground are very realistic and very scary -- I find this film, and 2010's "Monsters", to be believable visions of what an alien invasion of Earth could really be like. And of course, another great score by John Williams.

Interesting theory.  I always thought the reason people hated the film was because it sucked.

One blunder of this WOTW version is if the Martian machines were under ground all those years, why didn't they attack before mankind became over populated.  What was the wait ?  Still like watching it from time to time, but not as good as the original.

As far as War Of the Worlds is concerned, it doesn't bother me that it wasn't more like George Pal's version.  That one was good, however, it was only superficially related to the Wells novel and/or the Mercury Theater radio play.
There were just too many holes in the story: Where are they aliens from? Why are they here? Why did they remain hidden in the ground? Why didn't they get found years ago? And special effects/big dramatic scenes are fine--but you really have to relate to (or at least care about) the characters. I couldn't.
Monsters(2010) was way too slow. Granted, the director might have been going for some sort of thoughtful mood. Or perhaps he wanted to show how long the journey took.  But I found myself getting bored and distracted.  I am still wondering how in the heck a anyone could see Texas from a MesoAmerican PreColumbian pyramid.

As far as a movie about an ET prescense buried underground for centuries, then surfacing and causing havoc, "20 Million Miles to Earth" a great Hammer horror flick, did it much better that the new "War of the Worlds".

I do still have modest affection for the old  (early 1960s) CHILLER THEATRE films:  ATTACK OF THE 50 FOOT WOMAN,  FOUR SKULLS OF JONATHAN DRAKE, LEECH WOMAN and the 1953 INVADERS FROM MARS.  I also saw WASP WOMAN there on WPIX - Ch. 11.  Jack Kennedy was President at the time, so these were still pretty new.  I was pretty new myself.

The two that got me BIG TIME, were "JONATHAN DRAKE", with Zatai climbing up the rose trellis, and the sight of a headless body in the casket.
(Mega scary when there's a similar trellis outside your window.)

The other was, of course, INVADERS FROM MARS.  Imagine an eight year old child, seeing something that visualised every child's deepest nightmare: being terrified, with no one to help,....and seeing your parents (who were the only ones who COULD help), turned into brutal strangers who didn't know you.

INVADERS was a real DOOZY,  but I'm glad I saw it when I did....before 1963,  when childhood ended and innocence was lost.

I don't want to say that I love them, but I rather enjoyed Prince of Persia and John Carter. Definitely not the train wrecks critics would have you believe. John Carter could have been so much more, and how I'd love it if there were sequels, but as it stands, it was a lot of fun, IMO.

E, thankfully I don't know anyone who doesn't like the original Invaders From Mars. I can say with no hesitation it's one of my top 3 all time oldie sci-fi favorites (along with "The Thing From Another World" and "The Day The Earth Stood Still"). I could watch those films every day and never get tired of them.

A while back I sat with Jimmy Hunt who played David MacLean, the terrorized lad we all related to, for almost an hour at the Hollywood Collector's Show reminiscing about the film. He's still very fond of it and is hopeful of doing a DVD clean-up and re-release. I'm crossing my fingers, since the current "Special Edition" ain't so special, with a so-so quality print.

Here's yours truly with Jimmy -- "Gee whiz!! Colonel Fielding! Colonel Fielding!"...
