Title: Best TV Horror/Thriilers Of All Time
Post by: Scatter on September 30, 2010, 04:50:39 PM
Don't just toss out a title.........I'm trying to find movies I love and discover those I haven't seen. So, no list of 30 movies.Toss out one of your favorites, give a capsule review, and maybe a little about your experience viewing it as a youngster back in The Day. Feel free to interact over movies that others posted that had an impact on you too. Digressions encouraged!

I've been verbose about this one, but Dan Curtis Horror new classic "The Night Stalker", starring Darrin McGavin as Karl Kolchak, with Barry Atwater as janos Skorzeny is one that still puts me into a cold sweat. It's one of the modern vampire film classics with chilling acting and music stings by Robert Cobert that induce nightmares.

I don't care how warm or humid the night was, I was under to covers.

Ghost Story, an early to mid '70's anthology series, hosted by Sebastian Cabot. It was later retitled Circle of Fear, w/out a host.

Just great, scary teleplays about ghosts & the supernatural that were quite effective. I think you can catch some episodes on Youtube. The writing was probably on the level of Night Gallery, give or take.

Ok, here we go!

Don't be afraid of the Dark( 1972/73),w/ Kim Darby. She was so Hot! Anyway,
as a Child the movie scared the ghost out of me. Those little wax-headed creatures,
always whispering. I got chills, whoooooo! Then apon the final scene, holy crap!
The final scene, is so difinitive, obviously. But, that scene is so creepy, and has always
made an impression on me.

one of my faves is "Creature from Black Lake" starring Jack elam.

2 college students decide to investigate Bigfoot sighting(cant remember what state), so they pack up and head out.
They do run into some trouble with the local Sheriff, but he's really just looking out for them.
After asking around the town about the creature, no one seems to eager to talk about it, except a young man
who wants a ride home.
He tells the 2 students about a run in with the creature, when he was just 4 years old and traveling with his parents and grandparents.
Later on the 2 students talk to the town drunk(Jack elam) who has encountered the creature..
And later on in the movie, the students encounter the creature as well..
Dont wanna give too much away, for those who haven't seen it.
Now, the creature is only about 6' tall and a might skinny looking compared to other Bigfoot movies..
But, I like this movie alot...and reccommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it.

GREAT thread, Scat-man!

SOMETHING EVIL (1972)

This flick creeped me out several times when I first saw it.  Probably only seen it twice, but one scene stands out...  eerie red eyes staring out a window!  Haven't seen this movie in 20 years (at least), so don't know how well it has held up, but - it was directed by Spielberg and stars - wait for it -

D A R R E N   M C G A V I N!!!

No idea if this is out on vhs/dvd.

Anyone ever seen "Burnt Offerings" (1976)?? Oliver Reed and Karen Black and their son rent a possessed house from Burgess Meredith for CHEAP. The catch?? The house is out to kill them, and Bette Davis is upstairs.

All star cast, all star horror!! The swimming pool scene and the living trees alone make it worth the watch!

O.P. beat me to the punch.  The Night Stalker would be at the top of my list with Night Strangler being second.  O.P. also noted that Robert Cobert's score had a lot to do with the overall feeling of both of those films.  I always thought the biggest mistake the series made was not using Cobert for the music. It was like having a James Bond movie without the Bond theme (Never Say Never Again).  Anyone who watched Dark Shadows already knew the tone of Cobert's music.  The somewhat more jazzy score he did for both films worked perfectly.  Here's a bit of trivia for you, the name Janos Skorzeny was used for the name of a big bad in another horror series series years later.  Anyone know?

Oh, good catch John!! Well, we'll give a bit of leeway. If it was shown on TV in the 70s and creeped folks out, it's OK with me!! I actually wanted to include theatrical releases in the thread but was afraid it was too broad. But now that you opened the floodgates, let the water in!!

Burnt Offerings was shown on television first, then theatrically released. Some may disagree
with that? There two Film books I own, where I have read the details of Burnt's release.
Also, at a Horror convention Karen Black as a guest for R. ZOMBIES:House of 1000 Corpses,
she solitified/ substantiated the info of Burnt and it's release.

Two more TV movies that I think should be in, well, at least the top 20, are...

"Fear No Evil" which I already talked about in another thread.  Supernatural thriller with Louis Jourdan as Dr. David Sorell.  Very scary (and still not on DVD).

Another one that really scared me as a kid was...

Crowhaven Farm staring Hope Lang with John Carradine in a smaller role.  Sadly, I don't remember this one too well.  But I do remember it as one of the scariest made for TV movies of the 70's.  From the IMDB: "A young couple inherits a farm. Hoping that the rural location might help to patch up their strained marriage, they move into it, only to be confronted by the supernatural forces that inhabit it."  Mix in some witch trials and a scene where they put a board on poor Hope and start putting very large stones on it to crush her...  And you have a fairly horrific moment, at least for me as a teen.

It was the sequel to House of Dark Shadows.  But no Barnabus this time.  Picks up with Quentin Collins inheriting the Collins Estate (since pretty much everyone got killed in House).  Most of the same actors from DS just playing different roles (just like they did on the series).  Quentin, in a former life, had a relationship with Angelique...  of course we know that never works out.  The really cool news about this one is that they found all of the missing footage and they are trying to restore the original cut.  The studio took out like 20 minutes of this before the theatrical release.  But the footage has been found.  So hopefully when this finally gets released we'll see the original cut as Curtis intended it to be shown.

Sadly, the missing seven or so minutes from House has yet to be found.  Suposedly, a few prints were sent out to theaters before the studio cut it.  But no one's been able to find a copy of the uncut version.

I remember those and LOVED em. Right around the same time I was reading D.C and Marvel Horror comics. Great stuff.

There was a dedicated website to the restoration of both films.  Sadly, they ran out of money and the website closed.  I don't even have the link anymore.  One of the last announcements was finding the missing footage from Night.  They thought they might have found the missing footage for House in Japan but it didn't pan out.  Have not heard anything specific about release dates of either films on DVD.  Both were released on Laser Disk but they were the same cut versions that came out on VHS.  I'm hoping that the delay in a DVD release means they really are trying to get these films back to their original cuts.  That would be very cool.

If you don't mind some Sci-Fi Cheese. I LOVED Killdozer. I wish they would come out with a legit version of this. I have it on plain DVD-R that was burned of TV.

I also have Crowhaven Farm and Satan's School for Girls. I enjoy any creepy witch/ghost/supernatural TV movie from that era.

- Let's Scare Jessica to Death

One of my favorite ghost movies from golden era of the 70's.

Ghosts, vampires, insanity, a great ending and a creepy vibe layered through out the movie that is downright unsettling.

You never quite know what is real and what is not.

edit: just realized you meant TV horror...that will be my next post

Hey, O.G.,  I found this article...

http://www.darkshadowsonline.com/dso-news-restoration.html (http://www.darkshadowsonline.com/dso-news-restoration.html)

Of course since it's dated August 2000 one has to wonder what they've been doing for the last ten years.  Or maybe they couldn't get the sound done.  Or maybe they're waiting for the new movie to come out before releasing this.

- Dead of Night

A Dan Curtis trilogy. The first two episodes are weak, but the third one "Bobby" is frightening. I saw it when I was maybe 5 or 6 on a Saturday afternoon. I had nightmares for weeks. I saw again recently and it still held up.

Involves black magic, demons and terror.

Anything that remotely involves Rod Serling!

Having said that, when I think of "TV" and "horror" I just default to Twilight Zone....but because we are talking just horror here, I gotta leave that out.

Instead I go with Night Gallery...an episode in particular called "Pamela's Voice".

If that isn't a few minutes of creepy, made for tv story telling---I don't know what is!

I might get some boo's for this one..."Scream of the Wolf" with Walker and Graves...

It starts out as a werewolf type of movie, then takes a giant twist, which some fans take offensive to.
I liked it...it was very creepy, and you were on the edge of yer seat, cause ya wanted to see the werewolf...
Then, BLAM!! what the heck...I know, Iknow...but it is still a good tv-movie.

Hey, I love SCREAM OF THE WOLF, too, Doc!  And it was a Dan Curtis Production, also!  Curtis was the man in the 70's!  Also enjoyed MOON OF THE WOLF with David Janssen, although the werewolf make-up wasn't so great, it was still a good movie.

Loved Night Gallery Jess..........for me, superior to TZ.

Haven't seen Grizzly in 30 years. Man I want to though!

Moon of The Wolf ROCKED!! But then I love David Janssen in anything.

Never saw Scream Of The Wolf. Another one for the list!

I would have to put The Night Stalker, Night Stangler, Dan Curtis Dracula and Dark Shadows TV show at the top of my list. When I used to watch DS on TV I was only 7yrs old and to me that stuff was scary! Used to have nightmares every night after watching that. I use to think the severed gypsy hand was in my closet.

Haunts of the VERY Rich.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068682/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068682/)

Scream, Pretty Peggy is an American television movie directed by Gordon Hessler. The teleplay was written by Arthur Hoffe and Jimmy Sangster. It was produced by Universal Television and broadcast by ABC as a segment of its Movie of the Week series on November 24, 1973.

The title character is a college student and aspiring artist who works as a housekeeper in the mansion of mysterious recluse Mrs. Elliott and her oddball sculptor son Jeffrey. She becomes suspicious when George Thornton comes to the house looking for his missing daughter, who once worked in the position she now holds, and even more so when she learns Jeffrey's sister, whom she was led to believe was on an extended European vacation, actually is mentally dereanged and living in the apartment above the garage. Undaunted by warnings from her employer, Peggy is determined to befriend the girl, a decision that leads to a lot of mysterious doings and a Psycho-inspired climax.

Where Have All The People Gone? was a made for TV movie that was broadcast in 1974. It starred Peter Graves, Kathleen Quinlan, George O'Hanlon Jr., and Verna Bloom.

This movie speculates on what would happen if a massive solar flare erupted and anyone without a particular gene dies from a mutated virus.
[edit] Plot

On a camping trip in the mountains, a dad (Peter Graves) and his two teenage children are exploring a cave when the solar flare hits. After emerging, they soon find that everyone is dead, and there are only a few survivors left scattered across the country. Most, out of fear and survival, are out for themselves, but as they try to make their way home (where the mother had returned earlier from the camping trip), they find two people that need their help as well as a man who invites them to be neighbors.

They face dangers ranging from wild dogs, who seem to have been driven mad from the solar flare, to an armed gunman who steals their car. They rescue a woman (Verna Bloom), and later a young boy whose family was killed by two men who stole their car. Besides the physical journey, they struggle to overcome the emotional trauma of the events

Can't say I really remember alot of these well. I do know that if it was creepy/crime/disaster I did my best to stay up and watch them.

I'll post this link again. A fair amount of these are available on DVD.

A favorite of mine. Quarrya makes a great Count and a menacing vampire. The Return is OK but still has some great scenes.

"Zoltan, hound of Dracula" cant remember much, but I always liked this movie..that's the problem,nowadays...trying to remember movies from the past..when yer brain cells aren't working to well.  ;D

"Snowbeast" Yeti monster attacks Ski resort, another fave of the Bigfoot movies I have seen, and it's been a long time, since I have watched this one. Have it on vhs somewhere...

"Salem's Lot" one of the best Vampire tv movies ever made, the main vampire is so freaky looking, scared the heck outta me when I was younger. one of my fave parts, is when (cant remember his name, but he also played in "Moon of the wolf" the girl victim's brother)
he was sitting in the rocker chair, rocking back and forth, and the camera close up showed those yellow eyes...creepy.

"The World Beyond" staring Granville Van Dusen, JoBeth Williams, and Barnard Hughes.

I happened to catch this when it aired back in 1978. I was 5 and it scared the crapola out of me. People trapped on an island being stalked by a mud monster. Had no idea what it was called and I tried to find it for years but nobody ever knew what I was talking about. When I finally found info about it online I was surprised to find a lot of people's stories were similar to mine - saw it as a kid, scared the crap out of them, looked for it for years but no one knew what they were talking about. LOL!

RACE WITH THE DEVIL (1975)
I always thought this was a made-for-tv movie, but evidently it was a theatrical release.  Starring Peter Fonda, Warren Oates, Loretta Swit, Lara (Angelique!) Parker & the great R.G. Armstrong as the sheriff.  I love this flick!  Satanic cult relentlessly pursuing the two couples.  Some real creepy sequences and sometimes very surreal.  I highly recommend it.  I hear there's gonna be a (sigh!) remake.

I always liked the Devil's Rain,too.
It also has Eddie Albert and Tom Skeritt in it. And they say it's John Travolta's first role, but his part must be minor or his face is covered by a hood 'cuz every time I watch it I miss him somehow.
I have it on dvd.
Me and a friend had a band called Borg9 (named after Ernest). We played improvisational space rock, kind of sounded like the soundtrack to a science fiction or horror movie and we sampled some dialogue from the Devils Rain and mixed it into the music.

Adaptation of a Ray Bradbury novel. Haven't seen it since the original release, and thought it was OK--but I was a huge Bradbury fan back then, and would've though anything paled next to the book.

Mmm a very interesting thread. From your side of the great pond I think the Night Stalker and Trilogy of Terror are two of the top TV movies shown on English TV but I think Duel should be thrown into the mix. I always found this film a tense experience and a great idea. But don't forget some of the great British made for TV movies. BBC's version of Count Dracula for example was a fantastic movie, Frankenstein, True Story was another one. Both using Great British stage actors. Count Dracula, despite the cheesy special effects, was a spooky film and Louis Jordan made a great Count. One of my favourite scenes is where like the book, he scales the castle walls like a lizard. And of course don't forget BBC's The Woman In Black, probably the scariest made for TV movie ever.

I agree with Spock about the Jourdan Count Dracula.  It was one of the most faithful adaptations of the novel at the time.  Jourdan was the perfect combination of menace and nobility. I watched it again last summer and alas, it did not hold up so well.   Also, the Dan Curtis production of Dracula with Jack Palance was one of my favorites.

Yeah, that's the one. It had that rural horror element which always works for me since I live in the country.

Day of the Animals is OK. I got in a boxset cheap. Watched it twice and passed it on. Prophecy the same. Not bad for it's time. Along the same lines one of the dumbest movies of that era has got to be Night of the Lepus. Real bunnies jumping around and pushing plastic cars out of the way. Cool if you're 8 now...meh.

I remember a ghost story that Disney did that I thought was good called A Child of Glass.  I have mentioned it before hoping someone had it on dvd, but no one did.  I hope they do make it on dvd.  Does anyone else remember this movie?  What I remember is that this family moves into a mansion and there is a ghost of a girl who was killed there and thrown in a well i believe.  And she asks the boy to help her solve her death so she can rest.

DAUGHTER OF THE MIND (1969)
Ray Milland, Don Murray, Gene Tierney

This flick is more in the suspense/thriller genre, but when I first saw it at age 13, there were some absolutely chilling scenes.  It really creeped me out at the time.

From the IMDB site:
A professor of cybernetics comes to believe that his dead daughter is communicating with him from the netherworld.

THE NORLISS TAPES (1973)
Roy Thinnes, Angie Dickinson

Another classic from none other than...  DAN CURTIS!

Norliss Tapes....would have been a great series if it ever picked up, unfortunately...the pilot bombed..
really cant blame it tho, a blue vampire creature...kinda reminds me of those cheap Itallian blue faced zombie movies  ;D

This movie was not a TV movie, but it still one of my faves "Phantoms" starring Peter O'Toole...
I love the Patsy Cline song that plays throughout the movie "Falling to pieces"...
Spooky show...kinda of an alien cthuhulu (I know I spelled it wrong) theme....
based on the book by Dean Koontz..

Last night, I checked out "ABC Movie Of The Week" on YouTube.  Man, it really brought back some memories just seeing the titles and hearing the opening theme.  I mentioned SOMETHING EVIL, with Darren McGavin & directed by Spielberg, earlier in the thread, and lo & behold, it's on YouTube!  Plan to watch it tonight - hope it's as creepy as I remember!

Speaking of Bette Davis, just hearing her voice used to scare me!  After seeing HUSH, HUSH SWEET CHARLOTTE, THE NANNY & WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE as a pre-teen, Bette Davis haunted my nightmares more than a few times - awesome actress!

Every film mentioned on this thread is well worth seeking out, and as a long time fan of obscure horror cinema, I've seen 'em all. "The World Beyond" was the hardest to eventually track down. It took me years just to discover the title of the "mud monster" movie I'd seen as a kid.

Recently, I watched 3 made-for-TV 1970s films worth a mention, one in particular stands out.

That film was "When Michael Calls" (1972) a really creepy film staring an impossibly young Michael Douglas and Ben Gazzara. The main character keeps getting calls from a child who has been dead for 10 years that go something like this, "Auntie Helen, come get me. I'm lost. It's dark and I'm scared. Please, Auntie Helen." Then people around her start dying in strange ways. Is the caller a ghost from the grave or someone else?

Another I watched was "Daughters of Satan" (1972) with Tom Selleck who buys a vintage painting with three witches been burned at the stake, one of which looks exactly like his wife. Then I also watched "TheDevil Within Her"/ AKA "Sharon's Baby" (1975) with Joan Collins, Ralph Bates, Donald Pleasence and Caroline Munro, which is an "Omen"/ devil baby type of picture that gets a little silly at times.

I remember the movie "When Michael Calls" was pretty creepy. These movies must have really had an impact on many of us if we can at least remember a "weird feeling" from a movie we haven't seen in at least 30+ years.

There is another movie I would love to find called "A Little Game"

A Little Game is a 1971 ABC Movie of the Week that was first broadcast on October 30, 1971, starring Christopher Shea as a young boy who will anything to get what he wants. He is responsible for the deaths of fellow students at the military academy he attends, yet his mother (Diane Baker) refuses to believe that he is guilty of anything. His stepfather (Ed Nelson) begins to wonder if the boy wants to get rid of him.

I think that ABC should really consider releasing box sets of these lost gems. Prob not gonna happen but hey, we can dream right?

I thought that Vampire which aired on ABC in 1979 had some scary moments and was a good vampire flick.  It starred Richard Lynch as the vampire, Anton Voytek who is raised to life when a church is built over his tomb.  Jason Miller played the architect of the new church who is the target of Voytek's revenge.  E. G. Marshall played a cop who, I believe,  had encountered Voytek in the past.

While not a classic, Netflix has The Spell from a tv movie from 1978 available for instant streaming.

Yea
I have a crappy DVD-R version I've watched at least once a year the last 5. Wish more of those ABC movie of the night thrillers were available legit.

Man, I've got alot of classic films to add to Netflix after looking at this thread.
I missed alot of those when I was younger.

shoot, I have to edit this because I thought I was in the movie section, not TV!  ;D

I agree The Duel was awesome!
Grizzly scared the pants off me when I was a kid (I was living in the mountains so ...you know), but I didn't find it scary as an adult.  You have no idea how many times I was tromping through the woods as a kid and would hear grunting moving things in the nearby brushes that would send me into a terrified panic after that.  'course we really only had black bears there, but still...

Salems Lot was great. I couldn't believe they aired such horrifying stuff on TV at the time.  When that creepy bald nosferatu was in the kitchen, that was my favorite scene. What a great introduction into the vampire world (with Kolchack) as a child. Not so nowadays.  :(

And I loved Gargoyles, although I wasn't scared of them, I actually LOVED them. Hey, there's nothing wrong with a little cross-species pollination.  ;)

Duel A sadistic truck driver tormenting a motorist on his way to a job.

Great film.
