1975 plan to reintroduce Hasbro Kooky Spookys by Ian McLean, on Flickr

Hasbro considered revisiting the "Kooky Spookys" line in 1975: a family of three ghostly, blow-moulded, finger puppets that, once again, would glow in the dark. The group is labelled as "Ma, Dad & Junior".

The design of the child ghost resembles Brother Mortimer from the 1960s, but the faces of all three lack personality in this concept sketch. (From Hasbro's "Premium Division" - and with the "General Foods" heading - were these intended to be inserts in breakfast cereals?)

My beloved Hasbro "Kooky Spookys" (and several Fimo customs from unused Patti Peticolas designs) have been in storage since June 2014, but they emerged this week! It seemed like a good opportunity to reshoot them for Halloween. (I had forgotten that I had made a wig for the custom Mama Kaskit that I had crafted before I found a real Mama on eBay!) Rummaging through the brainstormed notes of Kooky Spooky creator, Patti Peticolas, for some extra names, I decided to call my newly bewigged ghost, Aunty Nightshade. And a spare Baby Spook'em eBay find has now given blue trim and renamed Little Formaldehyde, also from Patti's list of alternate names.

I have a notebook from Patti Peticolas's family that they sent me, filled with original designs and notes and what not. I also have a copy of the original 8mm film of the video for the Kooky Spookys tv commercial. I sent the film to someone I know who was able to transfer it from 8mm film to VHS, and I just wrote him to get that back because I came across someone who does very hi tech work on video restoration - his work has been admitted to the National Archives! I want him to digitally restore the film. He works miracles! I'm having him transfer some old 8mm family films and it's insane!


I plan on getting the restoration done, adding in scans of all the notebooks and notes, and a bio of Patti, then making the DVD available or perhaps easier as a digital download.

Yep, that's the page on the Kooky Spooky site I put up. I checked the email, it still works. Not sure if you've tried it lately. I think what happened was I had an old email address on that site years back and forgot to change it so that's why it would bounce.

Ah, ok! I forgot that was your site. I haven't tried in ages, but I definitely would love to get the completed digital product when it's ready.

I do have a distant memory of the Kooky Spooky ad playing on Australian TV for Christmas 1969. In glorious b/w of course (we didn't get colour TV until 1975).
