Ya know, and I will say it. F***!!!! Aerod***!!! They are such an overrated,  sellout, darlings of terrestrial radio. Their earlier albums are good, after that the band became worse. I think I really hate( hate is a strong verb) their whole persona. Their lackluster pop hits.
Strong words, my friend. I have to admit, I can't stand Steven Tyler. What a jackass. What legitimate rock star signs up to judge a moronic Karaoke contest on network TV? I guess times have sadly changed. I always liked it when musicians didn't go in for overexposure. Now, everybody has to push their garishly painted faces and ugly, bumpy asses in your face 24/7 (I'm talking to Cardi B., you classless idiot). I remember Johnny Lydon on American Bandstand, throwing the place into absolute chaos. He walked around and refused to lipsinc while his song was on. The worried look on Dick Clarks face...THAT'S what real rock n roll is. You didn't see Jagger, Bowie, Iggy, Plant or any of those guys hocking sh*t for other people. I am shocked by how little people expect of their "icons" today. I felt embarrassed by all those people who would jump out of a moving car so they could live-stream their little Drake heart dance. Sometimes I understand why serial killers go off the deep end.

Sex Pistols - Holidays in the Sun

I'm a little conflicted on this one. Great song, fantastic opening line ("A  cheap holiday in other people's misery), but the racism that follows is reprehensible. "I don't want a holiday in the sun. I'd rather go to a new Belsen" (Nazi death camp). Why? The Pistols insisted that everyone on their tour wear swastikas.  Why? Siouxsie & the Bansbees complied. The Clash told them to f*ck off and went their own way (good for them). It still bothers me. Mars, you're Jewish and a Pistols fan, how do you reconcile this? Youthful ignorance or just plain racism?

Well. In all honesty. I separate the artist from their political and religious beliefs, and what other thoughts they have retained as a Human. I myself do not know what an artist really thinks. Some hide their political and religious background and some don't. For example , Ted Nugent. Uncle Ted blatantly expresses his convinctions, whether anyone agrees or disagrees.

Now back to Johnny Lydon. I do not feel his beliefs are
based on antisemitism. If they are...well...that his choice. Like most artists in Rock and Roll. Rebellion plays a huge part in the art, the stageshow, the over-all facade.

Being a musician, I have done some stupid s*** for the sake of art and exposure. Hiring Women to shock a audience. ( If you ever seen the film the Sentinel-1977. There is a scene in the film, where Beverly D,'Angelo does something really creepy. Well.....I added that to one of my bands gigs....for sheer entertainment. To shock.

Does that negate the fact of racism, by being shocking. Probably not. If Lydon is racist, who really knows. Only God and his closet Family and Friends, would know.

Still. I am not going to stop listening to the Sex Pistols.
In truth, I bet there are many Musicians, Actors and Artist who are racist and we'll will never truly know. Some hide it extremely well. Not all are in the spotlight to know their lives or what goes on behind closed doors.

Also. Let me make it perfectly clear. I do not condone anyone's racist beliefs. However, again.  I do not know anyones' beliefs. Unless they make it know in the media or public.

Interesting topic guys. If I may jump in, seems to me Sex Pistols were nihilistic whereas The Clash had a specific ideological perspective. I think SP were just trying to piss people off, and so nothing was taboo. And to be fair "shock" can have a political value. The Clash, however, had a more cogent political agenda---specifically Leftism. So for them using the swastika in any context was offensive and unacceptable.

Overall it's an interesting topic. I thought of Ted Nugent too. I really like a lot of his 70s music but don't support his political philosophy. That can work both ideological ways too. Paul Ryan, for example, is a big Rage Against the Machine fan.

In terms of Nazism, Slayer gets in trouble sometimes. Not so much lately, but back in the day they would incorporate Nazi iconography and themes into their imagery and lyrics. Defending themselves the band would say "Hey, were a metal band, we write about evil s&%t and what's more evil than Nazism?" Fair enough, but what happens when neo-fascist audiences don't view it that way and instead think it's an endorsement? It's the band's call, not mine, just pointing out things are complicated.

So many examples. I'm a big fan of late 80s and early 90s gangsta rap. But now when I listen to it, I admit the misogynistic and nihilistic lyrics embarrass me.

As Mars points out, keeping the art and politics separate may be best way to enjoy these examples.

True, but thats hard to do when they put their politics and beliefs in their lyrics. Not to harp on the Pistols, but they doubled down on stupid with "Belsen was a Gas" ("Belsen was a gas, I heard the other  day, see the open graves where the dead Jews lay). That is clearly despicable and ignorant. I love the Pistols, but this type of crap is loathsome. I'm sure McLaren had something to do with it. As for rap, never a fan. I do remember Ice Cube chastising Bill Maher making a racial (not racist) joke, while promoting the re-
release of "Death Certificate" ( his 2nd lp). So, what's the problem with that? The album is filled with racist, misogynist tripe. He even advocated violence against Korean liquor store owners because they charge too much. Yeah, dumbs**t, they can't buy in bulk like Wal-Mart.  I don't judge older music by today's standards, but some things have always been despicable. Anyway, nice civil conversation.
