Quote from: jimm on April 23, 2014, 08:01:07 AMI loved discussing my non monster goodies as much as my monster goodies. I had one spot to go to see Monsters, Buds guns, Heps comics, and the rest of the stuff I love.

Quote from: tv horror on April 23, 2014, 08:24:33 PM...and as a little p.s comics do have a place on the site.

What comics do you collect?

Maybe the "What comics do you collect?" thread could be moved back to the Memorable Memorabilia forum where it was originally or to the new Horror Literature forum.

I agree. Here's Horrorhunter's Nutty Mads thread:

Nutty Mads

And what about Jimm's sci-fi collectibles thread? Is that sufficiently monster themed?

Allhallowsday if you knew much about the forum or its history or origins you would never have thought that.  At least for the mods and admins it has not been a big collection builder.  And there was little or no trading the first 3 years. And Terry started it after he had mostly stopped collecting.  So no.

...If one were to read all of the comments and had prior insight, one might construe that this change is a necessary refocus of the website's initial purpose: building monster toy collections.
If you want to view Paradise, simply look around and view it.

I've been around the UMA for a very long time (since 2007, to be exact), and I don't recall any mission statement anywhere defining such a sole, narrow goal.

Considering how active some of these non-monster posts are, I have trouble understanding why removing non-monster posts is considered a good idea.  How hard is it to ignore them, if you have no interest in them?  Have there been that many complaints about non-monster posts, that this was considered necessary for the health of UMA?

I don't believe it was complaints about the number of posts in non-monster threads that lead to the decision. It's more a matter of the number of posts overall being too overwhelming on the moderators. By trimming the forums down to a more manageable size, the mods and admins can better keep an eye on things in general, before they escalate out of control. Whether it be inflammatory dialogue or inappropriate images, or anything else that requires their interventions. That's my general understanding of the situation.

One might construe that one is being a dick. One might feel it's one, one might feel it's another. Both may be right or wrong. It's an unknowable thing, that.

The one (non) Monster thread I'll be saddest to see go would be Give Me a Gun or Somethin'! The Monster's At the Door! -
so much great & cool stuff in there... we sure did have a lot of groovy war & spy toys growing up... ;D

Hepcat

Yes, I would miss that one a whole lot too, as well as Bigbud if he can't find anywhere to post the treasures that still lurk down in his dungeon. That's a thread even a Baptist Women's Knitting Forum might make room for somewhere. And of course it's had "monster" in the title right from the start!

Good point hep! It is definitely a monster related thread, after all we all fought monsters in our youth and it wasn't with shovels and pitchforks. It was with cool gadgets and guns!
And bigbud obviously had the insight to title it as such.
Mirabile dictu,don't you agree?

Monsters For Sale

A little tweaking to re-focus on monsters/horrors, science fiction (contains lots of monsters)/Halloween (the one holiday devoted to other-worldly beings and monsters) seems like a good thing.

After all this is the "Universal Monster Army".

There is no great harm in threads that focus on pictures of pets, comparing tattoos, sports, etc. but they seem just as out of place here as would a "What Monster Movie Scared You Most As A Kid?" thread in a forum devoted to Cooking and Trading Recipes for Exotic Foods.  (And, come on, "sports" can be as divisive as politics.)

Lots of loosely related threads are being retained.  I have no problem with the changes.

No longer amused by excoriating this particular equine, I will now move on in search of a still breathing beast.

(See you in the other threads!)

One very salient observation though. UMA is not the best classic movie forum on the web by light years. It may not be the biggest and best classic monster movie forum on the web either. What it has become though, is the single best vintage baby boomer toy forum on the web. Why not continue with our strong point? Why get away from it? That would be like Babe Ruth de-emphasizing his hitting because it was as a pitcher that he broke into baseball.

And I am sure you know better than I do.  Quote my entire remark, because it was merely a thought process, not a declaration.  I'll rephrase: maybe someone will think the changes are about an initial goal of building a monster collection.  I did not and do not say that that is what I think.  And building a collection is a wonderful thing, not a bad thing.

It seems to me one might construe that you are taking a supposition personally.  It was not intended as such, and though I've been accused of hurling insults, I've never done that.  Have you?

So what your saying hep is maybe its about the army (us) and our interests in general as much as it is about the monsters themselves...hmmm... 'tis a tangled web...

jimm

Honestly I've wondered why they're was a general AND member only form, kinda redundant
