Rodan (1956)

Toho was starting to carve out an identity for themselves regarding their kaiju films with Rodan. In the '60s would come Mothra, KK Vs. Godzilla, Godzilla Vs. Mothra, etc. The Toho kaiju style would soon be established. The earlier two Godzilla films were more rooted in the '50s sci-fi giant monster movies style, although Gojira (1954) also put forth a powerful message regarding the dangers of war in general, and atomic warfare in particular.

Pretty awesome! Love Rodan. In terms of non-Godzilla Toho movies, this is by far my favorite.

*Btw: the 1979 Mattel Shogun Warriors Rodan is my holy grail of monster collectibles. I hope one day I have enough to cash to burn on one. Saw one for $4500 on Ebay the other day.

Ghidorah, The Three Headed Monster (1964)

Godzilla, Rodan, and Mothra take on Ghidorah, the space monster. Well acted, interesting, entry in the Toho Godzilla Showa series. The English dubbing makes the acting seem off, however, with unnatural pauses and clumsy dialog to try to match words to mouth movement. The kaiju fight scenes are a bit silly because Japanese suitmation at the time limited what could be done. Still, I find the Toho Kaijuverse mythos fascinating, and I can be forgiving of shortcomings. This movie holds a place in many a Monsterkid's heart due to being released in the magical mid '60s when monsters were at their height of popularity and many of us were discovering the wonder of them for the first time.
