Moe Howard was smart enough to retain all rights to the Stooges. The current rights-holder is a corporation split between the Howard and Fine estates. When the movie project was being shopped around, Columbia passed on it. The scuttlebutt is that Sony didn't want it unless they owned it.

I knew the families retained the rights, I just figured Coumbia would want it as historically they were the Stooges home studio. Stupid corporate nonsense.

You want more? Ever wondered why Sci-Fi/Syfy never had a horror host show, even way back in their formative days? They wouldn't hire an existing host like Zacherley, Elvira, or Joe Bob Briggs, because they wouldn't own the character. And they didn't want to create a new one, in case it failed. The only reason they picked up MST3K after Comedy Central canceled it was 1.) it was the #1 most-requested show they didn't actually air, and 2.) then-president Bonnie Hammer loved it! Once the sale to NBC/Uni went through, a cost analysis showed that MST3K got the same ratings as unhosted movies that ran in the same timeslot. So, it got canceled again, and its Sat., 9pm slot became home to crapfests like "Frankenfish" and "Mansquito."

Retarded all around. This is also the reason Hijo del Santo did not join the WWE when they were importing Mexican wrestlers about 10 years ago. Vince Macmahon wanted to own the rights to the Santo persona and character.

I think we all know how bereft of vision and common sense Hollywood is these days. We're lucky we didn't end up with that Sean Penn/Jim Carrey/Benecio del Toro Stooge flick from just a year or two back!

That's a bit extreme. I know Stooge purists aren't going to like the iconic three filtered through today's comedy sensabilities, but the Stooges did try to keep current with pop culture trends throughout their careers. I'm willing to give it a chance, until I see something that just screams at me, "The Three Stooges would never do that!"

I'm also a big Stooges fan - since childhood- and I don't think I can sit through this movie  :(
I think I would leave the theater feeling angry, and I don't want to ever associate anger with my precious Stooges! I don't recognize any of the actors, and even though they may look and act like the great Stooges, the storyline looks vacant and irritating. The Three Stooges are timeless and brilliant, so I don't understand why this movie is needed! I have watched MANY Stooges marathons, but I can't imagine sitting through 5 minutes of that movie. I'm usually open minded, but I just have a bad feeling about it.

If it keeps the franchise alive and the opens the eyes of a new generation, I'm all for it. It's no worse than anything Robin Williams ever did.

That would be a bonus.

It might turn out to be a great movie! I thought the Smurfs would stink, but it was great!

Hey, it had NPH. Nothing with NPH stinks.

I own Paramount's Stooges box sets all though the Curly years.  I don't hate Shemp, I just have never been able to love him.

I have many years of original Stooges shorts to watch whenever I want to - I REALLY don't need this movie!

I have watched the made-for-TV biography 2 or 3 times.  If they ever wanted to re-make THAT, I would give it a fair chance.  But THIS abomination? - NEVER!

If it is done by talented people, in a spirit of affection for the original actors (and both of those things look like they may be the case, from the trailer) -

- why the hate?

I think this looks as promising as at least half the comedic crap coming out of Hollywood. Like THE WOLFMAN and APES, if it is an entertaining tribute, I'll be satisfied.

I always wanted to see Arte "Laugh In" Johnson play Moe, and of course Billy West play Larry Fine in a Stooge movie. Not sure who for Curly, but too late anyway.
