I have one of those.  Mine is identical.

I have seen a few listed on eBay over the years - all exactly alike so, if it was fan made, there don't seem to be any variations.

Not practical for drinking.  Maybe they originally held floral arrangements or bags of candy.

Shouldn't that be "FRANKENMUG"? (A stein has a lid.)

i think novelty items out of Japan were typically from 20 years or so post WWII.

and production of dimestore items dropped off from Japan around 1965 with the later stuff being marked Hong Kong & then China

would that then make these fairly early pieces?

You know this kind of stuff I love.  Great remarks.

As far as the mug goes, I think it's later, as in '80s, but haven't a clue.  Frankenstein Monster went thru a lot of interpretations and gentle looking pieces before he started looking like the Monster again... I love it.  My Franken Stein.   ::)

EDIT: Didn't see the Japan mark.  It must be '60s.
If you want to view Paradise, simply look around and view it.

"Made in Japan" was the by-word for cheap (at least among us kids) until the mid-sixties. But that started to change with the popularity of Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki motorcycles and SONY portable TVs in 1964-65. By the early seventies stereo and TV shops were full of good quality Japanese products and Toyota and Datsun were carving out a niche in the auto market as well.

Collecting! It's what I do!

I once owned a 1972 Datsun 510, one of the worst cars I ever owned,  It would NEVER start in the rain, the moisture would mess up the electrical system all the time.

This was a lucky find, a set of the Timeless Terror porcelain castles for both Frankenstein and Dracula. In the back of my mind, I have had a plan to one day set up an elaborate train set based on the European villages in the Universal monster films; and this is my first step towards that end. I would also use either Dept 56 or Hawthorne village miniatures to decorate the layout. Right now I'm imagining a Frankenstein area with the aforementioned watchtower in the far background and a burning windmill somewhat closer; a Dracula area with Borgo pass and his castle on a peak; Talbot Forest with a scratch-built gypsy camp and resident Wolf Man. Also, included in the gypsy area would be Professor Lampini's wagon exhibiting both the skeleton of Count Dracula AND the remains of Kharis (I had to work the Mummy in there, somehow). Centrally located would be a court of miracles style village of Frankenstein/Visaria, with a bahnhof (train station). Finally, off in the corner would be the Notre Dame cathedral, with Quasimodo at the top and the Phantom racing by in a horse drawn carriage, being chased by the mob!  Obviously, I have a long way to go to accomplish this; but it's a good start. Does anyone have any reasonably priced Dept 56 or Hawthorne village sets?

That sounds cool!  :)

Perchance, is there a lake on these grounds?  ;D

Nope, it's going to be strictly gothic.

How will The Monster toss little Maria in the lake then?
