I just got a cardboard zombie standee that I ordered from Shindigz! It's real cute and comical- so the kids can take their pictures with it. Also, I bought a few things from Big Lots and a small poseable skeleton from Michaels.  EEEeeeee!  I'm getting cookoo for Halloween!

I'm getting pumped up right now!  Hammer curls, tri-pushdowns & Captains of Crush Grippers - oh!  You mean for Halloween - Yep, I sure am.  Hoping to really disturb my neighbors (who never speak to me) with some creepy, homemade life-size posters.  And sit on my patio sharpening a big axe and wearing pantyhose over my head.

Sounds like fun, can I join in on the fun?

Halloween is definitely my favorite time of year, and living in Maine is especially sublime when the season hits. I've noticed Halloween candy in the supermarkets already--a little early, to be sure. I mean, that's a 2 1/2 month window for candy shopping before the big day. Compare that to other holidays like Valentine's (about a month and a half), Easter (two months), and Christmas (about 1 3/4 months), and you realize that Halloween is THE candy holiday.

Actually, my favorite period of the entire Halloween season is when it first trickles in--perhaps I see some candy corn in a store or notice a tree that's started to turn, even though it's still late August. Also, in Maine at least, the last part of August takes on a really odd kind of atmosphere. The sun is more golden, for example. And there's the constant sound of crickets in the grass that inexplicably stop in mid-September.

For me, especially, the big night is also a very sad night. Once all is said and done, the kids have come, the candy (or most of it) is gone, I sit in my decorated living room and relive all my own childhood Halloweens. I have a lot of vintage Gurley candles (unlit), Beistle decorations (not repros), and assorted items like tin lithographed noise makers and plastic devil's heads. And, of course, the great animatronics--a crypt that opens up to reveal a green-eyed demon that flaps is wings, a skull that follows you with his eyes and says, "hey! Where you goin'? I see you!" All wonderful stuff. Then, at midnight, it's November 1st, and I feel the Halloween spirit just up and disappear into the night. When I finally hit the sack, I know a long winter is ahead of me, and I absolutely dread taking everything down and putting it away. Very sad.

yendor- You really have a way with Halloween words! I could see all that activity in my mind-thanks to your lovely description of Autumn in Maine  :)  I also feel a combination of sadness and relief when Nov. 1st comes along. We end up breaking down the decorations, fog machines, projectors and big props- from 10:00 PM- 12:00 AM that night and letting it all dry out for a few days in the garage before putting it away. It's an ordeal, especially if it's raining, but at least it's never really cold where we live. I never look forward to winter- ugh! I'm a summer freak, so I consider Halloween my treat for having to say goodbye to summer every year. You seem like you have some really nice vintage decorations. I would keep those candles and lithos out all year long. Those are the good stuff!
