Lester, I grew up in New Jersey, where the skeeters were like B-29's.  If it wasn't skeeters, it was classic Jersey biting flies. (the ones with teeth)  One thing that TPBM recommends:

Get yourself some vitamin B-Complex.  It's healthy, "green" and doesn't affect your relationships with humankind.  It DOES affect all sorts of flying nasties.  Also, put some Brewer's Yeast in your pet's food.  It helps with fleas.

Yup, when I was in college in Oklahoma I worked part time at the Builder's Square at the corner of 41st and Mingo in Tulsa. The tornado sirens went off and we had to hustle all the customers and employees into the Safe Room at the back of the store. Naturally, I wan't going to miss the chance to see a tornado, so a few other employees and myself told the manager we were going to do a final sweep of the store to get any stragglers, and then snuck outside to watch.

The funnel looked like it was forming right over the freaking store............had a greenish tint to the clouds. But the tail never hit the ground and it dissipated. Pretty cool experience.
