Backup Plan In Case Of Outages
« on: January 28, 2008, 05:12:36 PM »
Greetings. This forum has just recovered from a 36 hour blackout. A server at our web hosting provider went down on Friday 1/25 and disabled this forum's database thereby bringing down the entire forum. This kind of technical issue is not uncommon. What is uncommon was the duration of the outage. I was beginning to worry. I'm happy that I can finally stop calling Yahoo support and get on with other matters.

This was a very good learning experience. I realized not only the importance of the UMA and what it means to me personally, but also the importance of having a rock solid backup plan in case of future outages. Most of our members here at this forum were also members over at our old forum which was a Yahoo Group. That Yahoo group is still in existence. It's primary purpose is to serve as a message archive during the Yahoo years, but it will also serve as a future fallout shelter should this kind of thing happen again. The posting options over there are typically disabled. If the sky falls again, those options will then once again be activated. Please report to the Yahoo group for updates and continued discussions in the event of another outage. If your not a member at the YG, you can join at anytime for free by visiting http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/UniversalMonsterArmy/

P.S. Be sure to bookmark the YG url so that you can easily find your way in the event of another blackout.

That's good to know Terry. I was telling Bobby during the black out that I too have gone a few rounds with Yahoo support. Their a nice bunch of people but man does it suck when you're down.
Hopefully everything is straightened out and we're back to normal.

Hi Robert. It sure does suck when things go on the blink. I feel responsible even when I'm not responsible. I hate feeling helpless. In this case, all I could do was sit and wait it out. I had no access to the database whatsoever. And as I'm sure you know, the database is the very heart of the forum. Without a functioning database, your forum is nothing more than a bunch of useless files and codes. Hard to imagine that an army can be so vulnerable.  :(

Terry, if you wish, you can also use the Horror Online spot on the CHFB as a predesignated area to post updates for members of your forum in the event this happens again.  We use the Latarnia site for the same purpose.  I can also post something in our Announcements area.  Just let me know how we can help.

Hello Gary. Nice to see your name here at the UMA. Thanks my friend for the kind offer! I'm afraid I had already taken the opportunity and did post updates over at the CHFB regarding the outage. I did so only with your approval in the back of my mind. I hope I didn't cross the line without having officially asked first? I consider the UMA and the CHFB as sister sites. Whatever we can do to help one another out is a benefit for the entire hobby. I feel the same way regarding the HMA too. Thanks for your support Gary. I truly do appreciate it!

Not a problem at all, Terry.  I saw your posts and just wanted to make sure you knew that it was okay to do so and extend the invitation to the future if ever needed.   BTW, I also want to tell you how swell the new UMA looks.  Great new digs you have here!
