Here are two more then:

Quote from: Mord on July 09, 2019, 02:29:34 PMHe had absolutely no talent whatsoever and was a despicable human wretch.... He was a racist, scumbag, junkie. Face it...there are great heroin addicts (Miles Davis, Keith Richards, Johnny Thunders, Nick Cave, Kurt Cobain, etc) and then there's Sid (John Ritchie). The only thing he was good at was talking a beer bottle to the head and playing with his own blood.

Quote from: Mord on July 09, 2019, 03:12:59 PMThey idolized him because he wore swastikas and was a total nihilist....

You're touching upon the reasons why Sid Vicious was the very soul of punk right there. He was the very incarnation of the nihilism, the mindless rebellion, that was the underlying ethos of punk. But musical talent? That wasn't necessary.

Quote from: Mord on July 09, 2019, 03:08:56 PMTheir fantastic lead guitarist, Steve Jones, is a high profile radio personality in L.A.. You can email him to set you straight on this.

Oh come on! It's not that important to me.

Quote from: Mord on July 09, 2019, 03:08:56 PMYou just thrive on being contrarian.... You know your psychedelic bands, I know punk. Can't you just accept that?

Oh boy! Whether or not I'm a contrarian is no reason to get worked up about something so entirely inconsequential.

I get worked up because punk has always been important to me. You, on the other hand, are trying to fit in. The last few selections were punk, so you felt left out. I commend you for trying to try to get it, but you're still clueless. That's ok. Just dont pretend you know more than I do about a music that actually matters to me.  Calling punk "mindless rebellion" is your condescending view of the entire scene. Rock was dying, punk gave it temporary life support. They were tired of jam bands, country rock, prog rock, bubble gum pap...you, know, the music you like. The punks I know are intelligent, articulate people. Rock is not very musical itself. What you're saying is the same things my parents said about the Stones, the Who, Beatles etc.  What are your other fave punk bands? Lemme guess...Paul Revere and the Raiders, the Buckinghams, the Gordon Lightfoots, Fleetwood Mac? Btw, the songs you posted were throwaway cover versions included in a post break-up soundtrack album (due to Lydon leaving the band). Warner Brothers Records did anything to try to save the band because of their investment and the bands potential to make them money. Sid was NEVER onstage fronting the band. I knew when you went offline for awhile you were desperately looking up anything to counter my valid argument. Funny, I feel your beloved Cream were "inconsequential". A bunch of clowns playing half hour solos. Believe me, I've seen you plenty "worked up" about people treading on your "inconsequential" musical tastes.

Always loved the Stones version. This original version is a thing of beauty. I can't believe it's over 80 years old.

btw Mars, did you see Classic Rock's special Kiss issue yet? It's awesome. I bought copy the other day. It's not cheap at $20, but super fun. Interviews with Ace and Peter (among others) and cool pics from the different eras, including some of my favs: Dynasty, Unmasked (w/Fox), Elder, and Creatures (w/Ankh warrior).

Quote from: Mord on July 09, 2019, 02:29:34 PMSid's half-hearted version of Sinatra's(Anka's) "My Way" was one of their throwaway tracks.

I disagree. The Sex Pistols cover of My Way was a satire of Frank Sinatra's, and a good one. Satires have always been an accepted part of art and literature. "Weird Al" Yankovic has built a musical career satirizing the chart hits of other artists.

I always wonder how much greater these fellows could have been were it not for their use of heroin? It's certainly acted to shorten the careers of many.

Unbelievable! On the one hand you decry the lack of posting on this board and then you criticize me for posting about some certain subject.

For the record I posted the My Way video for the very same reason I post in any other thread. The topic caught my eye, and a previous post gave me an idea for a post on the topic under discussion. Call it a compulsion if you will, but sometimes I'm drawn to post in certain threads.

As far as being "left out" is concerned, that's a concept that troubles me not. It would be rather strange indeed to feel "left out" of posting in all the hundreds of threads on this board that have never attracted my attention or all the thousands of forums and social media sites, e.g. Facebook, Twitter, that I never visit. Are you actually arguing that being "left out" should be of concern to me?

Quote from: Mord on July 09, 2019, 04:47:25 PMI commend you for trying to try to get it, but you're still clueless. That's ok. Just dont pretend you know more than I do about a music that actually matters to me.

Excuse me but I was there to witness the explosion of the punk scene in 1977. I took in the local Toronto punk bands, e.g. Viletones, Poles, The Ugly, B-Girls, at most of their local haunts/whichever dives would consent to take them, e.g. The Edge, Turning Point, Larry's Hideaway, David's, Isabella Hotel. In fact the Viletones lived right in my neighbourhood and I saw them on the street on occasion. I took in visiting punk rockers the Boyfriends from Detroit when they played at David's and the Dead Boys from Cleveland when they played at the New Yorker Cinema on Yonge Street (albeit sadly I missed the Vibrators from the U.K. at the New Yorker). I bought the magazine Punk(Punk Till You Puke?) right off the newsstand in mid-1977.

Were you there for the explosion of the punk rock movement in 1977? I suspect that you were just a johnny-come-lately who clambered aboard in the eighties after the original wave of punk bands had imploded and the new bands still referring to themselves as punk as opposed to New Wave were just pale imitators of the ones from 1976-78.

???
1977?  You got me. Oh, yeah, now I remember. I was going to college and shopping at Zed Records (The 1st So. Cal. punk store I knew of...who I work for 2 years later). I did not see The Ugly or The B-girls (whoever they are), but I did see the Stooges and the New York Dolls at the Whisky in 1973. Does that count? I saw the Clash at Santa Monica Civic in 1979 (their first U.S. tour). I was invited by my Zed friends to go see the Pistols in San Francisco in 1978. I had a big test to study for and passed saying, "I'll get them next tour" (big regret). Saw The Damned (original line-up), Gang of 4 (1st tour and beyond), Killing Joke, Black Flag, Buzzcocks, Television, Patti Smith (2nd tour '76 Roxy Theatre), Ramones (same year and venue)...jeez, name a band. So, yeah, I think I have a little punk cred. As for new wave, I left that for the wannabes. Any more probing questions? Btw, I was very polite when I mentioned that Sid's "My Way" was not "The Pistols at their very best". You just can't stand to be wrong. I do love your cute little posts, though. Hint...brevity is an asset.
