The Creeper

Long live the UMA!

The Spangler

I love both, but...I gotta go with the "Zone", if only for the memorable quotes.  I mean, there's a reason why I've been running around for the last 40 some odd years saying things like: "Willoughby! Next stop is Will-ough-by!"  And: "They're calling MUSTER on me!"

Memphremagog

I'll go with OUTER LIMITS as it had more memorable monsters during its' run.
Twilight Zone had too many comedic or just boring epsiodes for me.

Sarah Collins: "Sometimes they do."

I think TZ owes much of it's reputation to excellent syndication deals.

I know I voted for TZ, but the Outer Limits monsters were way cooler!!! Possibly the best on "classic" televison, IMO.

Uncula

I am also one of those who grew up when the shows were "first run".  I think that comparing them are a little bit like the "apples and oranges" bit.  They were so much different in concept.  Like "Star Trek" TOS which was less about space travel than it was a series of morality plays, it matched up with the "Twilight Zone".
The "Outer Limits however seemed to me about true horror shows.  I can truly say that even as a child, "the  Outer Limits" has been the only show that has really scared me.
So, if you want a very well done moeality play, watch the "Twilight Zone".  If you want to be frightened, it's the "Outer Limits" all the way!

Both outer limits and Twilight zone are cool, and they both had some really dumb episodes

Very well said Uncula!! TZ isn't really a horror anthology to me, though I do really like it. The morality play aspects of it got a bit heavy handed though.

That was what killed M*A*S*H* for me. After Alda got control, he used the series as one interminably long morality play (and ode to his massive ego). A decidedly unfunny one at that. Same thing happened with Klugman and "Quincy".

TZ never got quite THAT heavy handed, but between the morality plays, the stories with just a twist ending, the ones played strictly for laughs, horror was really not even a predominant theme.

Therefore................OL rules.

Which is it? Outer Limits or Twilight Zone? I must consult with The Mystic Seer.

The Mystic Seer says THE TWiLiGHT ZoNE.

Twilight Zone had tons of Monsters, not all monsters are gruesome unhuman freaks.
Some of the episodes had neighbors turning on neighbors, friends turning on friends.

then of course you had this kid.

My friend, I haven't seen many OL episodes (although I am intriqued due to this discussion), but that OL "monster" in no way is more horrorifying than the Burgess Meredith episode you picked, one of my favorites to this day.

He loved books but never had time for his pastime, after a nuclear fallout, he's the only one left with time to read millions of books, then in his excitement, breaks his glasses. By himself, all his treasured books, all the time in the world and he can't enjoy his favorite pastime. That is indeed horrifying! LOL!

In all seriousness, I am entertaining the idea of picking up the OL seasons 1 and 2 from target for 20.00, after hearing other member's viewpoints on it has definitely intriqued me. Always learning more and more from the UMA!
