Hi everyone. I'm new to the forum, and I love it.

I was wondering if anyone out there might be able to help me solve a little personal mystery...
When I was 3 or 4, in 1975/76, two of my prized possessions were the Power Records "A Story Of Dracula, The Wolfman And Frankenstein" and a certain monster book.

I don't recall if this book was a story, or an activity book, or even a coloring book. I just remember that the front and back covers, if memory serves,
each had a photo of an obviously plastic "monster hand", one tinted green, the other pasty white. I think one had a plastic spider on it. The background was a darker color, maybe dark blue or gray. I have no memory of the title.

I've scoured the web for years trying to find this, but as you can see, I don't have much to go on!

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks!

John

Dear John-

If you come on over to the Power Records Yahoo Group, I'd bet someone there could solve this for you.

Best,
-Craig W.

Craig,
I'll check it out! Although I should clarify that I don't think this book was related to any Power Records.  I just mentioned the record because I thought it might help with the time frame the book was released. I could be wrong though!

Thanks!

John

Hello Horseflesh and welcome to the UMA, I think that the horror book that you are looking for is this one  Ebay Item number: 290297921577. It was very popular in the 1970's.

TV horror,

Wow! Based on the limited description I gave, that would fit the bill!

But alas, that's not it.

Thanks for your suggestion, though! The mystery deepens...

Here is the power record..

That contains art by the massively talented Neal Adams. He recently published a graphic novel based on that Power Record comic which is really excellent.

I loved that record! Used to read/listen for hours when I was a kid. Now I play it while I'm carving pumkins on Halloween! Great artwork, some of those images are seared in my mind forever!

"I shall awaken memories of love and crime and death..."

You just aren't whistling Dixie, Mike. :)

Thanks for the picture! It's such a great record. Sad story: when my dad found out that I was listening to (and reading) this all the time, I guess he figured that it wasn't appropriate for a 4-year-old and THREW IT AWAY!! IN THE TRASH!! I bawled for days when I found out. Funny, he didn't seem to mind all the other monster stuff I had, but something about that book. In retrospect I think it may have been the whole "pentagram" part of the Wolfman story. I've asked him about it, and he doesn't even remember the record!

I know for a while it was available for download on ScarStuff. I don't know if anyone if offering it right now...

John, are you thinking about the kids monster make-up book that had the crusy creepy looking hand on it? If so, I may be able to help. I thing the books cover color was either a deep orange or green color.

I've seen pictures of the book you are describing with the fake monster hand on the cover, but I can't remember where I saw them. I'm working on it.

The rest of you need to order this book! It's Neal Adam's "Monsters" and it's the comic that was used for the 70s "Story of Dracula, the Wolfman and Frankenstein". I know, the cover looks different. Trust me, it's the one you remember. It even has some extra pages of monster battles that were edited out of the LP book version.

While looking for pics of that book with the monster hand on the cover, I stumbled onto this. This isn't the one I was thinking about, but it does closely fit your description and does have a pasty white hand on the front cover and a hairy monster hand on the back cover. I'm pretty sure I was thinking of another book, but this is called "Special Effects Make-Up" and you might as well look at it.
