Super 7 just released Toho/Godzilla Showa era trading cards. They say series 1 so I imagine they plan more. Available as the box or single packs. Expensive.

Details:

5 cards per pack. There are 84 movie stills cards and 12 monster profile cards — each in foil or prism holofoil variants— as well as 12 different base stickers, which feature backing art that joins to form a kaiju battle mosaic.  The prism holofoil card variants are limited prints— there are only 54 black, 13 blue, 5 gold, and 1 silver prism holofoil cards.

What does a typical pack of Topps/other cards from a convenience store counter cost? I think they were 5¢ when I was a kid.

Generally not $7 for 5 cards. $1.40 per card is up there when you will be getting doubles.

I looked up inflation for 5 cents in 1963. LOL

$0.05 in 1963 = $0.50 in 2024

A lot of things have gone up a lot more than 10X since 1963. Comics were 12 cents, and they were $4 when I checked last a few years ago. I understand that's supposed to be an average, but it doesn't seem accurate.

Seems like I read, a looong time ago, that the price of paper was going up a lot faster than normal inflation.

What really jacked up comic book cover prices was that comic books had moved from being cheap disposable entertainment items to niche "collectibles" that the big companies could milk for more money. Corporate greed in action.

Super 7 just dropped their first series of Toho/Godzilla Showa-era trading cards. Each pack has five cards, with a mix of 84 movie stills and 12 monster profiles, plus rare foil and prism holofoil variants. There are also 12 stickers that combine into a kaiju battle mosaic. The rarest prism holofoil cards are extremely limited, with only one silver, five gold, 13 blue, and 54 black prints.

This is just cruel, when only 0.0001% of people can ever hope to have a complete collection of something. :(

Items that are manufactured as "collectibles" are just tools to manipulate people into trying to complete a group of things as a money grab. In other words, people who fall for this scam are being victimized. Legit collectibles became collected later through the love of the items remembered from the past, usually from childhood. I pick and choose manufactured "collectibles" I like, but I don't fret over completing a so-called "collection" of them. Just buy what you like and don't be manipulated. Less buyer remorse that way.

This is true, but in 30 years these will be the things of the past and the people, then, won't be able to "collect them all".
