Was it Nosferatu or the rats causing the plague?

I thought this would make an interesting discussion. In the original Nosferatu movie, I have read reviews and interpretations in which they claim that Nosferatu brought the Black Plague with him via rats, and that was causing so many deaths. I've always thought that the intent was that Nosferatu was feeding on people and that it was assumed that rats and the plague were causing the deaths. I think that is the correct interpretation because in the end of the movie it mentions that the deaths stopped suddenly after Nosferatu was destroyed. But I am open to hearing other arguments.

How do the rest of you see it? Were people in the movie dying from the plague spread by rats, or were they all victims of Nosferatu? I'm curious which is the correct, intended interpretation for the movie.

I concur although the true source of plagues throughout history
were the fleas carried by the rats.
