Don't like "Curse of Frankenstein", or "Horror of Dracula"?  ;D

The Hammer films are definite exceptions to the general rule of "hating remakes". They are actually quite different from the Uni stuff as we all know and have their own style which makes them classics as well. I usually dislike most remakes, the more recent the more easily dismissed. That seems like the old "you kids get off my yard!" thing, but honestly most remakes (Hammers aside) are lazy and unimaginative. Some are good, like Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) ...most aren't. I probably won't watch the new Wolf Man movie or a new Creature movie, unless I hear enough good stuff about them to change my mind (which isn't likely). The whole idea of a remake is to cash in on name recognition, but it seems counterintuitive to rehash the same ideas.

I always thought the idea of a sequel to be superior to the idea of a remake. With a sequel you could honor the original and legitimize it while using fresh ideas and still cashing in on the name recognition. Sequels are always possible even if the monster died in the original. It's fiction, and the storyline can be continued using the ideas of offspring, curses, time/dimensional travel, cloning, magic, whatever.

Remember when, for years on end it seems, there were constant articles of "Universal Vs. Hammer"? Seems quaint nowadays. I will tell you this, Hammer's Mummy "re-make" is my favorite, and I dare say the best, 'Kharis Mummy" film to date. One of the rare occasions where a remake is better than the original, or becomes its own thing altogether.

The Mummy (1959) by Hammer is my favorite Mummy movie too. Hammer's use of new ideas, color, limited gore, and hot girls definitely became their own thing. Most put them on par with the Universal classics. Of course, they have the pedigree of influencing our childhood love of monsters, but that aside they're just plain good.
