Trying to find the name of this movie or TV show, about a strangler...

I remember watching some movie or TV show back in... probably the 70s.  I recall it was about a strangler.  At the end (I think it was the end), when the law figured out who it was and was closing in, the strangler strangled himself with his own hands to avoid capture.  Does anyone know what movie or show this is?
