I personally found the film went too far, and into a distasteful area.  The Conjuring series handles the subject matter much better.

Couldn't have said it better myself.  I also find folks generally tend to miss the point of the film. This film is about the two priests. That's why it's called The Exorcist and not "The Possessed".  The demon hates them. A grudge against the elder, and a disdain for the younger. The demon wins in the film. He causes the elder priest's death via heart attack, and the younger priest jumps out a window, thus dying (or believed to be dead until the third film years later). The girl is a pawn. The priests were the target. The demon won. Plus its over the top in its vulgarity. Peter Cushing is on record as hating the film, and came about as close as he could to calling it excrement. I cannot deny the film is well made, the make up is great, the actors are choice....but the film isn't for me.

Thank you for posting this photo, Anton. Being a fan of the film and book, this will be a great addition to my Exorcist collection. The late, William Blatty wrote an excellent book. In which I feel Mr. Blatty's book is better than the film. Nevertheless. The Exorcist film is not for everyone.


The Conjuring(2012) is an excellent film.

Thanks for sharing your feelings on the film, guys.  I happen to think it is one of best made (and scariest) films of all-time, and groundbreaking on so many levels.  The sound of the film is still far more disturbing (and powerful) to me than some of the horrible imagery.  My parents (who were very young and apparently not too concerned) took me with them to the drive-in to see it when I was 5 years old.  I had nightmares for 2 weeks; but I apparently liked the feeling of fear at that age because I've been a fan of horror ever since.

Good thing about this is the Mego Rocky figure looks pretty much like Father Karras too so a change of threads and you have one priest

I think it's one of the best movies ever made-- and I don't see it as a devil wins story, although I completely understand why it could be interpreted that way.   

It's an overcoming impossible odds story-- the older priest knows going in this is going to be too much for him, the younger priest with his shaken faith wouldn't do this without the older priest.  The younger makes the ultimate sacrifice to save the little girl.

As someone who has his doctorate in Theology I've discussed this film with many members of the clergy and various ministers and the vast majority of them are big fans of the film.

Does it go too far?  Absolutely.   "Too far"  isn't a strong enough phrase-- it's crosses way past the extreme but then like something like SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION it has to, it has to get so insane that you agree this is an impossible task.   I discount all of the sequels as fan fiction and don't let them interfere with my opinion of the original film.

Long winded, yes, but hey that's what I do.   As for an action figure from the film, it's a great likeness but not something I'd want to own.

No doubt about it.  It is a great film.  The theme is iconic.  The imagery is iconic.  I might give it a rewatch sometime.  Modern media has really gone way out there, so maybe a second viewing of The Exorcist will seem tame by comparison, though I'm pretty sure I'll still feel uncomfortable with some of it.

Funny story; A couple of years ago I was teaching a writing class and I was using some examples from the Exorcist script in my lesson, which had me watching and rewatching some of the scenes of the film over and over again to pick out examples of dialogue exposition that didn't come across as clumsy or heavy handed-- I became pretty desensitized to the obscene language after a few go throughs but as I walked into the kitchen to get another cup of coffee I was surprised to see a nurse taking my wife's blood pressure-- she was getting a quick physical for an insurance policy--which I had completely forgotten about.

"Well, she's in Olympic athlete shape."   The nurse says as she puts her equipment into her bag, then smiled and me and said "And you have some interesting tastes in movies."

Wifey explained to her what I was doing and she said "I don't judge."

Fun story. I wonder if the Nurse was ever familiar with the Exorcist. As it seems she obviously never seen the film.

I don't collect modern Mego but that looks like a great sculpt. Am a huge fan of the film and saw it before deciding to read the novel in my teens...

It was nighttime and I was home alone, the only light in the house was the lamp near me as I read. I got to the part of the book (and movie) where the mother hears a noise in the attic, and goes to investigate. Just then, I heard a *THUD!* right above me upstairs and it scared me so badly I literally tossed the book up in the air!

I held my breath to see if I heard anything further, then sloooowly crept up the steps to see what it was. Turns out, a stack of books in our spare bedroom had chosen that exact moment to fall to the floor! I finished reading the book -- but only during daylight hours. (It's a great read, by the way).
