My grandfather passed away on Friday, January 30th, 2009. He was 90 yrs old and suffered from Alzheimer's disease during the last 5 years of his life. A hideous disease in every way. He will be missed. He was one tough SOB right to the very end.   :'(

BTW, it was at his house back in the 60s that I first played Monster Old Maid. The 60s card game by Milton Bradley. One of my earliest monster toy memories. That and Spook Stories gum cards purchased by my grandmother.

My thoughts and prayers go out to you and the family.Your are right about it being a hideous disease.Mom had it for 10 years til she passed and dad had a form of it Demintia for the last few yearsof his life. The preacher discribed it as a thief that takes away the mind.I can only hope a cure for it is not far away.Again I'am truly sorry for your loss.

DEATH be not proud, though some have called thee
Mighty and dreadful, for thou art not so...
For those whom thou think'st thou dost overthrow,
Die not, poor death, nor yet canst thou kill me.
From rest and sleep, which but thy pictures be,
Much pleasure, then from thee, much more must flow,
And soonest our best men with thee do go,
Rest of their bones, and souls delivery.
Thou art slave to Fate, Chance, kings, and desperate men,
And dost with poison, war, and sickness dwell,
And poppy, or charms can make us sleep as well,
And better then thy stroke; why swell'st thou then?
One short sleep past, we wake eternally,
And death shall be no more; death, thou shalt die.
-John Donne, Metaphysical Lyrics and Poems, c. 1921

"There, peeping among the cloud-wracked, war-tormented sky, above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of that forsaken land, and hope returned to him.
For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end, the Shadow was only a small and passing thing, after all; that there was light and high beauty forever beyond its reach..."
-J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings, The Return of the King

My condolences, Terry; grandparents are the best. Thank God you had him for a good long while.

Thank you my friends for your warm wishes. Much appreciated. My grandfather's passing was a welcome release. His disease had been holding him hostage for far too long. My family and I knew the time had finally arrived a few days before he actually died. I kissed his forehead last Wednesday before I left him knowing it would be the very last time I would see him in the flesh. It was. That is a very hard thing to do ... saying goodbye.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to get out of this cemetery forum. It's cold and lonely inside here.

Terry, our hearts are broken for you and your family. I never had a grandfather on either side because they were both dead by the time I was 2. And I've always regretted that void. While the temporary parting is excruciating, it's a wonderful thing to have had a grandpa, and I hope you take comfort in the blessing of having him for so long.

My condolences, Terry. My Grandpa Dan passed away while taking a nap in his backyard lounge chair on a beautiful summer day... We should all be so lucky. Nice that you were able to say goodbye beforehand.
