Halloween Whistles

There's a hint of fall in the air this morning and it got me thinking about my favorite things associated with Halloween. One of my favorite memories is the cool stuff companies used to make in the 60's just for the holiday. Thus I dug out my two Halloween Whistles for a quick trip down memory lane. They are labled "Wowee Chewing Gum" and were made by Glen Confections of Buffalo, New York. As kids we loved the little witch and owl illustrations , the cool semi-spooky sound of the whistle (sort of a wax harmonica), and the strangely inviting taste of the thing. You could buy one for a dime, play it until you annoyed your parents and then eat it. What more could you ask for? At any rate I still have two of them. Anybody else remember these things fondly?

Yep. Those were fun! Here's some pics:

So were the big Wax Lips.

And, the Nik-L-Nip.

I get the same sort of nostalgia when a chill in the air reminds me of Autumn. Our local variety store would have all of the new Topps items, wax toy/candy (like your whistle) and 5 cent lollipops (suckers?) which look like they were made by pouring the candy mix into a cupcake mold and sticking a wooden handle before it hardened. Cinnamon was a favorite flavor...

I do remember the witch whistle. Question - did anybody actually eat these, or (as we did) chew 'em until the flavor was gone then spit 'em out like gum?

Yes, I would eventually chew them like gum. Most of them were pretty good. I couldn't keep the big red wax lips held in my mouth for very long before biting into them.

Yes, your parents would be the ones most annoyed. Your sisters and the family dog would get the annoyance meter up to 100%.

'60s I guess. I grabbed those pics off Google Images.

The two I have are from the 60's. I think 68 or 69. They've held up okay, but are showing their age (just like me I suppose).

Not much! That's about as cool as it gets.

Glenn Confections also produced these wild cool wax Fangs in various packages for many years:

These neat Dinosaur cards were included with the wax Fangs in the above package.

It appears that Glenn Confections has been producing those harmonica shaped Wax Whistles in some format for decades. Here's a box from 1941-42 for Superman Whistles:

And here's a Glenn sales sheet from 1971 picturing Chew-a-Toon Whistles plus other wild cool confections:

I sort of recall the space guns, but I don't remember ever seeing the other products. It's neat that a Superman whistle was produced. The box looks neat.
