Just got thru watching one I remember seeing back in 1970. "Night Slaves", with James Franciscus and Lee Grant. Treat yourself to some TV movie nostalgia!

I'll post more of these in this thread, when I find them. Post any you find, too!

Shades of THE THING! "A Cold Night's Death" with Robert Culp and Eli Wallach. This one holds up very well! The last shot is really creepy!

I remember NIGHT SLAVES too. Haven't seen it since back then either, so I will look it up when I get time.

I remember NIGHT SLAVES too.

It has some plot similarities to IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE. (And one of the stars of FORBIDDEN PLANET.)

Cool idea for a thread!

It'll be fun watching those old TV movies from the '70s!  :)  A few of the best/most popular ones, like THE NIGHT STALKER and DUEL, have been released on DVD, but most haven't been seen for 40 years.

I'm sure everybody remembers this one. KILLDOZER! (1974) From a story by Theodore Sturgeon. Similar to King's "Christine".

Mike, thanks for giving me the heads-up on KILLDOZER.  I flipped thru it quickly to answer my basic question ("is it an early-version of MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE?") but that leads into a deeper study.  "No, probably no relation whatsoever" other than the easy-to-imagine scenario of Machines Get A Life Of Their Own horror tale.  (Or the 1960 Twilight Zone episode "The Thing About Machines", much less 1953's wonderful THE TWONKY with Hans Conreid vs. an alien-inhabited TV set.  Something tells me the whole Machine vs. Humans horrors is about as old as machines themselves.

But, in this case...

Stephen King had his short story TRUCKS published in a magazine in 1973 - this was molded and expanded into his 1986 sole directorial effort MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE.  KILLDOZER, presented on-screen in 1974, probably originated separately since King was still out in Maine, full-time, and the KILLDOZER writers were LA-based.

I was quite amazed to see the cast of KILLDOZER, especially Carl Betz who apparently didn't go home to Donna Reed on those evenings.

THE TWONKY, by the way, is available on YouTube but there are several entries, many of which are crap-filled.  Here's the link to the rather low-quality broadcast-recording version:

Theodore Sturgeon's original novella KILLDOZER was first publisher in Sep. 1944, so it predates King's story by 3 decades.  :)
