I fully agree with your assessment of both films, Anthony. I would also throw in the Karloff dud, "The Climax", in that list.

I forgot to add this to my last post.

Another film that I have a problem with is Black Friday 1940. This is another Arthur Lubin horror film? It is more like: "A Brain Transplant meets Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde. Once again, I only view it because of Karloff & Lugosi; and it is part of the Universal Horror Canon. That brings to mind some very interesting questions:

What defines an actual/real Horror Film? Just what films should "really be considered" Universal Horror? I'm sure that's a subject for another time, and a different thread.

Yes Geezer Butler, you are so right in saying: "We can't like them all."

Have a great weekend all.

I really can't include "Black Friday" on that list. That film is just too entertaining & unique to be lumped with bland fodder like the '43 Phantom, Climax, & the Tracy Jekyll/Hyde. It's a one-of-a-kind blend of mad doctor/horror/sci-fi/gangster genres. That film has fascinated me since I first saw it at the age of eight. I still love it (though not in the same way as "The Black Cat" or "The Raven").

Great stuff AC. Night Monster one of my favorite non-canonized Universal Monster films. Ghost of Frankenstein is a great too. It sometimes gets overlooked because it's sandwiched between two iconic movies "Son" and "Frank meets Wolfman." But Ghost is right up there in awesomeness.

The Frozen Ghost (1945)

House of Horrors (1946)

She Wolf of London (1946)

*Martin Kosleck triple feature. One of Universal's underrated secondary actors IMO.

Two for a Wednesday night:

The Return of the Vampire 1943 Columbia. I just love Lugosi's line - "You're a fool Andreas. A complete utter fool."
Son of Dracula  1943 Universal. Great performance by Lon Jr. The swirling vapor effects are top notch.

It is interesting to see the evolution of the "man to bat" transformations. I think this is the first time they tried it. Then in House of Frankenstein it was better. House of Dracula features a GREAT one in Miliza's bedchamber. And of the course - the pinnacle in Bud Abbott and Lou Costello meet Frankenstein.

Still love these films.
