but skywalds...stanleys...eeries... were just a whole nother flavor.

I wouldn't lump the Skywalds in with the Eeries and Stanleys though. The Skywalds are much closer in quality to the Warren mags than to the Eeries or Stanleys.

Those are fabulous! Do you have a source/link for interiors?

No. I heard someone is doing a WOH Archives volume (Dark Horse?) but I have yet to see it. Reader copies of all three issues occasionally turn up on eBay for around $15-$20 each. High grade copies are expensive.

Web Of Horror featured an art contest on the centerfold of each issue with some pretty spectacular background art by Wrightson and others. Enough empty space was left so that kids could draw in their own monsters and send it in to the contest. I bought issue #2 off the stands in 1970 and I removed the centerfold and drew some crude monsters in but never sent it in to the contest. I still have that #2 but I don't know what ever happened to the centerfold/artwork. I upgraded my readers with the copies in the scans at the 2001 Monster Bash. The contest winners were supposed to be revealed in issue #4 which was never finished because publisher Sproul stole some of the artwork and skipped town. Some of the art/stories for #4 by Wrightson and Bruce Jones (that Sproul didn't steal) were eventually published in various fanzines in the early '70s. It could have been the greatest monster mag ever if not for the ineptitude and crookery of Sproul. Jim Warren was worried about the competition but I guess he breathed a sigh of relief when WOH came to a screeching halt. As cutthroat as Warren was it makes me wonder if he was somehow involved in the plot to bring down WOH before it built up steam. Maybe he offered Robert Sproul a chunk of money to pull the plug. Who knows at this point? It's just another mystery in the Monster Magazine Wars '50s-'70s Saga.

Anyone who's still reeling from the Stanley cover art on the previous page and needing an antidote might want to feast his eyes on this scan of the Frazetta cover for the second issue of Eerie:

Here are a couple close-up photos of my RCA Victor Monster Rally LP from 1959 with sleeve art by the incomparable Jack Davis:

And here's a more detailed picture of the sleeve that I lifted off the net:

All of those songs from Monster Rally are on You Tube. Another favorite of mine is Close The Door.

I know them all practically by heart since I listened to that album so much when I was a kid. My Dad worked at a radio station and brought Monster Rally home to me around 1966. The radio station was getting rid of some older albums and Dad knew I was a monster nut so he corralled that one for me. I still have it and it still plays. I put that album and some other monster albums on a cassette tape in 1984 when I went into the Army and I still listen to that tape every Halloween. Love the Jack Davis cover art!
