Yes, seriously deluded.

Monsters For Sale

#16

Well, I have one:

This stupid hunk of plastic sold for $635 dollars.

It would have gone for roughly half that, but some darn UMA member decided to bid against me.  Grrrrrr.

It leans to one side because the warm plastic sagged at the jaw-line.  It probably should have stayed in the mold a little longer or been gently supported while it cooled.  The base and the head are all one piece.

Still, it is the only example I have ever seen.

The top of the head has a circular smooth area in the middle for the cut-out to convert this to a bucket/speaker box.  The area outlined is the same size as the speaker.

Before the Clinton Plastics heads came up in this topic, I had planned to  start a new thread about highly unsual items in our collections.  Since this was brought up before I took these pictures yesterday, I'll ask my question here:

Does anyone else out there have one of these?

Mine leans to the side just like the one in the current auction.  They seemed to not cast the same thickness all over and sag under their own weight on the thin side while they were still hot.  Maybe that's why so few exist.  The one on eBay now, is the only other one I have seen for sale.

Would REALLY like to hear from others who have this thing.  Does yours exhibit the same flaw?

Could we try to get a more accurate count of known examples?

The one in the auction is super ugly... and not in a good way.  Maybe they think all that surface damage tells of a long and battle-tested history.  Maybe you are buying not just the piece, but the history that goes along with it!  Think about that, will ya?   ;D

Obviously not much thought went into the design of this thing- it doesn't even look good. The base looks like an afterthought, as if the mold got damaged/wore out on the bottom of the head and they just slapped it on a simple base and started up production again.

I am betting the sagging is from the hot light inside over time.

As far as how many of any of these things exist or are "known"- likely more than you'd think. If 99.99% of the millions of people in this country were shown this thing and were told to give it a value, most would say a couple of bucks or less.

I would bet more of these (and other "valuable" old toys) are thrown out as junk than "discovered" by ebay dealers/collectors and eventually find their way into a collection.

I think it's an aesthetically cool piece. The silliness of the bell bottom adds to the coolness. Yes, it looks cobbled together. Like an oddball 60s monster item should.

I assumed the base was just attached to a head when I bought it.

When it arrived in the mail, I was surprised to see that it is molded as a single piece - base and all.

It is a lousy design for a lighted decoration.  It's too small not to have a vent in the top to let out the heat from a light bulb.  Still, if you could see it in person, I think you'd agree that the sagging occurred during the manufacture of the item.

Maybe it was designed for use with LED lights.

Tell him $1,500, and you8'll throw in the other remaining example, so he'll still have one in his collection.

I was lucky enough to get one of these in a trade about 6 months ago along with a second one with the head open like the normal candy bucket. I also got a pumpkin lamp with the same type of  base in the original box.

Does yours lean to one side at all?  Is one side of the bottom thinner than the other?

(That makes pictures of 3 known examples.  Two closed top and one open.)

I have pictures of 6 or 7 different ones saved over the years besides the two I have and I know of at least 3 other collectors that own one, not including yours. The lamp I have is not melted and sits pretty even from side to side. The open head I think was meant to be a candy dish/container as the cord hole was never punched.

I messaged and inquired about this piece as well. It's Steve, the sidekick of Jordan from the show Toy Hunter. He wont let it go cheap as he knows its rare. I would have to say there are more than 2 others existing. I would like to own it, but its too much mula to sink into one piece. I got a nice bucket last year, so I'm happy with that for now!
