I am so glad to get a good copy of THIRTEEN WOMEN.  The many bad reviews aren't incorrect but it's a hoot to watch and, her "absurd powers of hypnotism" are only 'absurd' if the viewer lived in a Silent Film vacuum where DR. MABUSE wasn't just hypnotizing victims, but his actual spirit took them over, occupied their mind and body and committed whatever acts Mabuse wanted.  I thought Loy's THIRTEEN WOMEN character really wanted to achieve this kind of 'power' but the filmmakers were just too, well, cowardly.  "Who'd believe a Miss Mabuse?!!"  Uh.  What about the character THEY delivered, though? 

Still, it's easy to see - along with an earlier Loy outing THE SQUALLY - that Hollywood had no idea what to do with a woman of such looks. 

I think the whole Racist Fringe angle should have been dumped and turned into Bullied Schoolgirl's Grownup Agenda.

These two early Loys have made me wish we'd see a lot more.
