Classic "Doctor Who" Time Travels Back to American TV
"Doctor Who" fans in the United States are getting a (slightly late) 50th anniversary present. And it involves jelly babies.

Starting this summer, 489 episodes from the sci-fi series' initial, 26-season BBC run (1963-1989) will begin airing nationally on Retro TV, "the original classic programming digital network." Owned by the Chattanooga, Tennessee-based Luken Communications, Retro is currently available in more than 61 million homes in 74 U.S. television markets.

I'm very happy for those who get that channel! I once saw the end credits of what I assume was a Tom Baker era episode, and loved the theme and outro visuals with the tunnel; it made me want to see the show (and I forget why I never did). Fast forward to recent years with new Doctor Who episodes being popular in America...people suggested I try the new episodes, and told me not to worry about the originals. I found myself thinking, "No thanks, I'd much rather start from the beginning of the series and watch on from there." Thankfully, many folks can now do this! Well, aside from the missing episodes, that is, since I doubt they will air the "audio accompanied by stills" versions of the missing episodes (but it's great that the original fans recorded the audio back when the missing episodes first aired)!

You're wise to trust your instincts. In my opinion, the best aspects of the new series are whenever they pay homage to the old series and acknowledge its own history. Even just within the old series, watching "The Three Doctors" or "The Five Doctors" is so much more rewarding if you've been watching from the beginning. The multiple incarnations of the Doctor has great meaning for people who are in their later years: imagine you're middle age or older, and you're working on some important project. And to help you around the conference room table are yourself when you're in your 20s, 30s, 40s, etc.  Which of your younger selves would you get along with and which of your younger selves would you want to punch in the face?
For those who have lived a long life, and can't believe the way they were back when they were college-age, it's a fascinating thought experiment (which is what science fiction is all about)

This is a show I desperately want to like......but I just can't get into it.

I'm looking forward to all of them, especially Doctors 1-3.

Wow. How can one leave the house with this offer from RetroTV? Tom Baker will always be my favorite doctor.

Story to look forward to:

THE DALEK INVASION OF EARTH
Still my favorite episode ever.  Hartnell was fantastic, and to me the best Doctor.
