In THE UNDEAD, the therapist uses hypno-regression on Pamela Duncan to have her relive a past life(in this case, the Middle Ages), it comes off as a sort of time travel. When she becomes trapped there, the guy(whose empty clothes are shown) uses the same hypnosis technique to journey into the past and rescue her. Unfortunately, the Devil, who is behind all of the sorcery going on in the film causes the hero to be trapped there in the past..hence the empty suit of clothes in the present. It makes more sense if you watch the whole film.  :)

That was my first thought, but the alien ship in LF was long and opened like an umbrella at one end.
