I saw this article in the financial section:

I think this would be a good time to produce an updated re-make of George Orwell's classic "1984".

Maybe it could be set back in the near future as it was originally intended to be presented - "2084".

Thoughts?

Kudos to Orwell's vision.

I doubt if I'll be here in 2084 but writing a script that goes beyond Orwell's would be a challenge.

I've read the book a couple of times, it is an amazing book.  I like the 1956 movie version better than the 1984 version.  I think I need to find the book and read it again.

Have you seen the 1954 (I think?) UKTV version with Peter Cushing? I think that one is my favorite.

No, I didn't know anything like that existed.  Time to start looking!!

Does anyone know which of these DVD versions offers the best picture/sound?

There was also a 1949 NBC University Theater radio version of the story starring David Niven.

In 1953 The Theatre Guild On the Air radio version starred Richard Widmark.

Also in 1953, the Westinghouse Studio One TV series did the first screen version starring Eddie Albert.

Of course, the BBC did its TV version in 1954.

I think my favorite version is still the 1956 movie.  Too bad there is no decent copy in existence.

It's on several DVDs. Probably on YouTube, too.

If they remake 1984, can a reboot of SPACE:1999 be far behind?   :o

That was my original point.

With all that is in the news today and the addition of the whole computer world that did not exist in 1949 when the book was written, it is high time to update the story.

As much of the original story as possible should be melded with modern technology to upgrade a script that reflects today's reality.  Just don't make it another exercise in cartoony CGI "special" effects like the Matrix.  (Yecch.)  Stay as close to the original mindf**k as possible.

Lots of free publicity in the news.  Lots of anxiety in the movie-going public.

The time is ripe.

The new title of the remake could be called "2013 through 2016".

It started earlier.

It should be called "2084".

Ummmmm...No

- I don't want to see an updated version of any films that I like. The modernism-take on these remakes is (in my opinion) what makes them crap. I love the dated special effects, visuals, etc. No more remakes, they are mostly all crap.
