it was a planned purchase not a find

how many of these franken buckets do think have survived and are either sitting in a collection or waiting to be found at a thrift store or something?

No way to tell.

I remember one member who told of finding one on top of a "free items" pile.  It made me wonder if yours came from a garage sale or swap meet.

Wow! Gumballs plus either space invaders or monsters is a nigh unbeatable combination!

Does anyone remember these gumballs? Was there simply an imprint of an image tattooed on the surface of the gumballs?

???

The image on the Monster Balls card is taken from one of the stickers that were included in the Leaf Spook Stories set from early 1962:

The gumballs I remember were unmarked. The card was just hype to get kids to buy the gumballs.

Well the gum must have been really delicious anyway!

Approximately what year would this have been though?

Hep, there's a 1964 copyright down in the fine print.  :)

I was just speaking generally about when I was a kid in the mid '60s through the early '70s. Most of the gumballs I remember were unmarked and most machines had very few prizes and lots of gumballs. There must have been marked gumballs as well (like those in Count Zero's vending machine pic), but I just remember the unmarked multi-colored ones for the most part.

Love it! Vintage gumball machines are boss.

Since gumball machines were a big part of my life when I was a kid, I bought three vintage ones in 1981 shortly after I started re-accumulating the treasures of my younger days. One I sold to a friend, but the other two I repainted and still have. Here's one of them:

I also bought a Bozo gumball machine at a toy show about seven years ago:

The only Bozo machine I ever saw as a kid was in Ken's Variety on Wharncliffe Road but it was so cool that it left quite the impression on my mind. I therefore had to buy the one I saw at the show.  I need to take it apart though since it's not working. It seems to be jammed somehow.

Well there's your problem right there. One should never attempt to substitute gumballs with Jam.  Jam tends to harden with age, and obviously interfere with the workings.
What ever happened to my Transylvania Twist?

So it's the jam! I never would have guessed.
