There are some more out there, but I am trying to identify what are usually anonymous pictures.  Luckily the same pictures are posted in many places and a lot of pictures are taken of a few of the more popular theaters.  Cross-matching architectural features and looking up movie release dates helps to pin these things down.

Anyhow, that MY excuse for slowing down in my posts.  I'm running out of the easy ones.

I will try to post more as often as I can.

The Warfield Theatre in San Francisco:

(A late Karloff picture and an Italian thriller, both released in 1963.)





Planet of the Apes & Beneath the Planet of the Apes & Escape From the Planet of the Apes & Conquest of the Planet of the Apes & Battle For the Planet of the Apes - Warfield - San Francisco, California - 1973

(All five "Planet of the Apes" movies in a row!  Oh, my aching butt.)

You will note the changes in the Warfield's marquee over the 9 years spanned by these views.  I think that was due to changes in city laws concerning structures hung out over sidewalks.  After all, 'Frisco is a place known for earthquakes. 

Some of these old marquees are very imposing structures.  It is not unusual to come across pictures of fallen marquees - especially in places where there are heavy snow storms.

I'd seen this photo (usually cropped) a number of times before, but it was never identified:

(Turns out this "coming feature" poster is a 24-sheeter from down under.)

(I always wonder when I see a person like the lone woman in this photo.  Who was she?  Why was she alone?  What would she think if she knew someone was wondering about her so many years later?)

(Note that a star in the original "Frankenstein", John Boles is starring in the currently-showing feature "She Married an Artist".  Even those posters are 6 or 8-sheeters.  Compare them to the size of the doorways.)

The person who took these photos was very interested in the fact that "Son of Frankenstein" was coming to his town.  And he must not have been alone.  Seriously, when have you ever seen a "coming soon" poster so much bigger than the poster for the feature "now playing"?
