Flatliners, 2017 - Medical students attempt to re-live and record what happens to their patients during "near-death" experiences - by artificially stopping their own hearts and being revived.

We all know the results from the 1990 original.

Nondescript young actors failed to capture my interest.  Two of the women looked so much alike that I lost track of which character I was supposed to be watching.  Everything was entered into in such a haphazardly casual way that it minimalized the danger of what they were undertaking.  Not a sequel.  Just different enough from the original not to be a strict remake.  Think of it as a re-imagining.

Kiefer Sutherland was wasted in a too-small cameo role.  It would have been interesting if he were re-cast as the matured character he played in the original, who discovered what the next generation med students were attempting and became an adviser or tried to stop them in a sequel scenario.

Not the worst of movies.  Some good jump scares.  An OK watch, if you haven't seen the original.

But the 1990 film was a lot better.

I recently watched Rob Reiner's wonderful 1987 movie "Princess Bride", about a grandfather reading a fairy tale to his grandson.

That influenced me to watch another, similarly framed tall tale:

Edward Scissorhands, 1990 - A small girl asks her grandmother, "Where does snow comes from?"  The answer is a science fiction laced fairy tale.

Not a huge fan of Johnny Depp but he was perfect in the title role.  And a very frail-looking Vincent Price was great as the Scientist who created him.  Director Tim Burton makes the film fun.  And Danny Elfman's music is just right.

Edward is as much a misunderstood creation as was Frankenstein's "monster".

Late For Dinner, 1991 - Through a series of missteps, a man and his brother-in-law wind up running from the law - both trough space and time.

This little movie reaches back in time, to 1962, to relate a touching tale loved ones separated for decades and what happens when they are suddenly reunited.

It plays almost like 3 separate films.  The first part plays like a simple-minded, straight comedy, the second part plays like a light-hearted sci-fi story, and the third part is sweetly romantic.

Either the studio had no faith in the property or critics panned it, but this movie played in theaters for a very short time. The VHS release was over almost as quickly.  When it was first released on DVD, it disappeared from stores in the blink of an eye.  I always suspected there were licensing problems and the DVDs were recalled.

If you just want to have fun with a science-driven plot, give it a try.

There are a couple spots that always make me all emotional.  (I'm a big, fat ol' softy.)
