Neither The Sea Nor The Sand (1972) (aka The Exorcism Of Hugh)

This unusual film reminds me of the Gothic Romance subgenre even though it's set in the 1970s. It combines Romance and Horror. It evokes memories of Dark Shadows and DC's Sinister House Of Secret Love comic book. It takes heat from several people who claim that the story is threadbare and the whole thing moves too slowly. But, I don't agree with those folks. It's true that it builds up slowly, but when the horror kicks in it's fairly chilling. It involves two people who fall in love and refuse to part.. even after one of them dies. The decomposing body returns to be with the lady he swore to never leave (Susan Hampshire). This isn't another zombie flick. It's very subtle and restrained, and creepy as hell. The atmosphere is beautiful and imposing, featuring much seashore footage from the Isle Of Jersey and the coast of Scotland. The movie is well acted and competently written. If you need a gore-splattered flesh munching circus to enjoy a zombie film then look elsewhere. If you appreciate creepy atmospheric horror that almost seems possible in some alternate reality then you may just enjoy this. Jointly produced by Tigon and others.

I just finished watching 1931's Dracula with my father. This was my second viewing while he had never seen it before. The last time I saw this film wasn't even through home video, but on a VHS tape my Grandma had recorded for me that one along with all of The Mummy, The Wolf Man, Frankenstein, but only the end of The Invisible Man and the beginning of Bride of Frankenstein when Turner Classic Movies was showing them. I wanted to see Frankenstein (1931) the same night, but Dad said he was tired. I am going to sit through it a third time but with the Philip Glass score accompanying the picture. I have a feeling that this might be the version of the feature that I will ultimately prefer. What say you monster lovers?

Video Nasties: The Definitive Guide (2014)

Man, this good. I'm going through it all for the second time. It covers the ridiculous banning and prosecutions of horror films in the Holier Than Thou UK during the '80s. Great commentary by Kim Newman and several others. Each Video Nasty is covered in some detail with the trailers.
