The Werewolf Versus The Vampire Woman (1971) (original version is Werewolf Shadow)

Just a quick word about The Werewolf Versus The Vampire Woman. It's true that the US cut of Werewolf Shadow loses some of the quality and polish of that excellent original version, but it's still a damn fine monster movie. It has been slapped around in PD Hell for years, and has become the fodder for horror hosts. That film is FAR better than any of the horror hosted shows that crudely try to belittle and mock it. I'm a fan of many horror hosts including Penny Dreadful, Dr. Dreck and Moaner, Remo D, and a few others, but I hate it when some jackass rips on a good PD film for a cheap laugh. Sure, if the movie is a stinker like Manos or Beast Of Yucca Flats then feel free to kick it around and rip it a new one, but good films deserve respect whether they have fallen into the Public Domain or not.

Cross Of The Devil (1975)

Good Spanish Horror film that has fallen into obscurity. It started as a Paul Naschy project, but ended up with Naschy only involved with the writing. From what I have gathered Naschy brought in his friend Hammer director John Gilling to direct, and due to some sort of falling out Naschy was booted off the movie?! Reportedly, Naschy was sore about that for years and had venom for the production in general. The story behind this would make a good movie in itself if the facts could be dredged up. Some obscure fanzine somewhere probably has the scoop but I haven't been able to Sherlock it out yet. Maybe someday...

Anyway, the movie is really tame for '70s Eurohorror, and a bit slow at times, but still entertaining if you love this subgenre. Some added exploitive elements would have been welcome to spice things up a bit. The plot involves ghosts and the Undead Knights Templar made famous to horror fans by Amando de Ossorio's Blind Dead films. Ossorio's version of the Blind Dead is much more effective, but then they were his babies. The hash smoking protagonist is played by Ramiro Oliveros (Swamp Of The Ravens) who fights against the Undead Knights Templar for a ghost played by Emma Cohen (Horror Rises From The Tomb). Fernando Sancho (Return Of The Evil Dead) makes an appearance as an innkeeper. The actors all deliver good performances and the movie is well written and directed. Spanish Horror fans should enjoy it.

I purchased my copy from Trash Palace. The picture is a bit soft, but it runs 92 minutes and appears to be complete. It is shown in widescreen and Spanish language with English subtitles. The lack of nudity may be because this is the Spanish release clothed version. There were a couple of instances where a bit of topless female nudity could have been inserted for an international release (as was common practice back in the day), but this may be the only print available. Too bad BCI/Deimos never released a good DVD version of this for their excellent Spanish Horror series a few years back. Never say never, though. As long as there are enough fans clamoring for good releases of these films, then someone usually manages to turn up an original negative or good print somewhere and a company like Severin or Kino gives us the Blu-ray release we want with nice special features. One can only hope.
