The Night Stalker" (1972)
                        -Darren McGavin

Plot: IMDB

Carl Kolchak is a newspaper reporter with an abrasive personality that has gotten him fired ten times from various big-city papers. Now he's reduced to reporting for a relatively small-time paper in Las Vegas. It's here he gets the story of his life. But will the local sheriff, or the D.A., or even his own boss, let him print it? He has an ally in the FBI agent brought in to investigate this strange case. It seems someone is biting the necks of young girls and draining their blood. Can this killer with supernormal powers really be a 70-year-old Rumanian millionaire? Can he really be a vampire? And can an aging reporter do anything to stop him?

Phantom's Review: One of TV's best horror films. Produced by Dan Curtis' (Dark Shadows) and starring Darren McGavin in one of his best roles. A great blend of classic vampire story with modern day sensibilities. (at least for 1972). Good atmosphere, acting and story. a classic.

I love the movies and the show. Great stuff

Ultraseven X (2007) episodes 1-4 Ultraseven X is a 12 episode series from Tsuburaya Productions made for an adult audience that aired in a late night block of live action sci-fi monster shows aimed at adults that has become popular in japan in the last few years. the story takes place in an alternate Blade Runner style totalitarian Utopia. Ultraseven X looks pretty much just like the original Ultraseven, but has muscles built into the costume . So far we find Ultraseven X's human form-Jin-awakens with amnesia and a beautiful girl gives him the Ultraeye tranformation device and tells him he is this world's savior. Jin soon discovers that he works for a group called DEUS that is a top secret organization that combats alien invaders, sort of like Men in Black. The series is much more character driven than the usual Ultraseries and the FX are very well done, as usual for Tsuburaya. I am anxious to wtch the rest of the series to find out exactly who Jin is, who the mysterious girl is as she keeps popping up, and what exactly is going on with this seeming Utopian society.

Scarecrows (1988)~The scarecrows were friggin' awesome, perfectly creepy/spooky....to bad they couldn't have been featured in a better movie!  I think this would have worked better as a segment in an anthology movie, way to much padding and instead of padding it with something interesting like the back story on just what these scarecrows were all about it is just padded with trash talk and banter between groups of people wandering around.  Not as gory as I expected either but it does have its moments of blood!  I'd give it a 2 out of 5 corn husks!

I had a "found footage" double feature last night. not my favorite type of film (the dizzying camera work usually bothers my vertigo!) but these were pretty good:
Alien Abduction:The McPherson Tape (1998) this one actually predates Blair Witch. It's about a terrifying Thanksgiving gathering of the McPherson family in Minnesota when a UFO lands, knocks the power out and terrorizes the family. The acting is not that great, but the movie held my interest alot better than things like Blair Witch nd Cloverfield both of which I didn't really like because I found the characters to be so unlikeable I didn't care what happened to them!)
Apollo 18 (2011) I really liked this alot. This one really came off as actual footage shot by US astronauts. It covers the Apollo 18 Moon mission which supposedly never happened (Apollo 18, 19 and 20 were all cancelled by NASA) as a top secret classified mission to the Moon's South Pole. The 2 astronauts discover a dead Russian Cosmonuat and his moon lander and more importantly slowly realize they may not be alone and the Government may have sent them there as expendable guinea pigs.

Cabin in the Woods (2012) really liked this film.
I agree about Apollo 18, never could really get into "The Blair Witch Project", while Cloverfield was "meh".
What ever happened to my Transylvania Twist?

Never seen Alien Abduction but I have seen The Last Broadcast which came out the same year (1998) and which Blair Witch does a really good job of ripping off though the creators of Blair Witch claim to have never seen it.

Phantom Stranger

Captain Kronos-Vampire Hunter (1974)

Plot: IMDB
Vampire hunter and expert swordsman Kronos finds himself in a small village where several of the local young women have been found in an advanced state of age, their youth drained from them by a vampire's kiss. Kronos' search leads him to the Durward estate where he is met by the effete children of the apparently aged and sick Lady Durward.

Phantom's review: Probably the last great film from the original version of Hammer Films. A very underrated film. Great action, plenty of atmosphere and an different take on the vampire legend. Sadly the proposed series of films never happened. It would have been interesting to see where they took the series.
