If there were any doubts, both the official web site and the film's Facebook page list it as a "gothic comedy."

I think IMDB and Wiki have always listed it as such!?

Wikipedia describes it as a "supernatural drama comedy," while IMDb lists it under "Comedy/Fantasy/Horror." But, those aren't official sources. Now that Warners is using the term "gothic comedy" in its publicity-- which I don't believe they had prior to the trailer's release-- all doubt is removed.

A disappointment delivered audio-visually on May 11th, it would seem.

And there ya have it. I don't think anyone has to guess how I voted. I won't plunk down a penny to see this. I'll watch as much as I can stand on Netflix or YouTube after it bombs. This will do "Charlie And The Chocolate Factory" type business.

A repeat visit to BurtonWorld: not really scary, not really funny, not really dramatic; weird in a "knockoff Edward Gorey" kinda way.

Penny Dreadful

I am still baffled by the fact that two guys who say they're fans of the classic series came up with THIS.  Sigh.  So disappointed.

Last night, at the behest of my son, I went to see the 21 Jump Street movie.  I had watched the original show some, not a huge fan of it, but if it was on I'd usually choose it over the handful of other pre-cable choices available.  The show was a cop show, where a group of police officers were assigned to attend high school classes as undercover students.  It was Johnny Depp's first major acting role.  Before the movie, I saw the DS trailer.  It bore faint resemblance to the show.

The 21 Jump Street movie was REALLY FUNNY!!!  The original show was not a comedy, and if I were a big fan of the show looking for a treatment of it that was along the lines of the show, I would be disappointed.  I didn't really care about that, so I had no preconceived notion as to what it should be.  The intended audience for the movie was mostly younger than those who would have been alive in 1987 (like my son), or at least old enough to enjoy the show.  They loved it!

I never really thought I would find myself enjoying it, I was prepared to endure it and retire to the lobby if it became too unbearable.  It has Ice Cube in it for crying out loud...  and while I have nothing against Ice Cube in general, movies he is in are pretty universally terrible.

Now that I've seen the trailer, I can know for certain that it isn't really the Dark Shadows I know and love, it's something else.  Just as 21 Jump Street was something else.  If it's good, that's OK.

Oh, and the trailer for 21 Jump Street sucks.

Like, Mattel presents Ken as Barnabas Collins fruity. I hope I didn't give them an idea.

Best summary I've read.

Burton's obviously a very talented guy, but is he a great director? He just seems disinterested in story or character, you wonder what he could come up with if he had a strong writing, producing or (dare I say) co-directing partner.

As for the trailer. I think it shows a disconnect between understanding "the 70s" and "a small New England coastal town during the 70s."

I'm also wondering how he's going to stretch his short, Frankenweenie to a feature length movie ???.

Wondering if anyone will bother mentioning that, in 1772, Maine was still part of Masschusetts?

What I want to see is a Barbie Psycho set, with Barbie as Marion Crane, and Ken as Norma Bates.
