Seriously! He looks like an emo kid demanding money from his mom so he can go to the mall and raid Hot Topic, then suck back on Starbuck's until closing. Now, I miss Ben Cross.

Are you sure that is supposed to be Barnabas? I saw another group picture and he looked more normal. It's not as bad as that first pic that looked like Michael Jackson. It is Tim Burton doing this so I expect things to be a bit whacked out. But he needs to be careful in handling an iconic character like Barnabas Collins. I do miss Jonathan Frid.

I would guess it is Barnabus: look at the hair as it lays on his forehead.

That's Depp, according to the caption. It looks like a scene from the American Colonial period, with Pfeiffer as Naomi Collins and a recently vampirized Barnabas.

Mrs Frankenstein

Pretty sure that's Johnny Lee Miller.

Barnabas doesn't get turned by Angelique until he's older and played by Depp.

Nope, that's Depp. A sorry looking Barnabas.

I don't believe it until I see the film..that doesn't look like Depp at all and is a dead (!) ringer for Miller, bizarre.
Usually when Burton works on new films I am glued to the screen for news but this one just haven't fully got my attention yet..glad he's working with Pfeiffer again, she is great!
I never watched the original series..tried but..no, when exactly does it get good??

aura of foreboding

I don't know what you guys are talking about, but, to me - a huge Dark Shadows fan- he looks fantastic.  This is how a vampire ought to look.  The make up is reminiscent of a classic vampire with a strong homage to Max Schreck, and the prosthetics make him look a great deal like Frid.  Depp and Frid's facial structures were nowhere near similar.  With the makeup, they are.

As for Cross, to say that he was a very tan vampire would be an understatement.  If the 1991 series had never happened and I was basing my observations on the looks of the actors alone, I would most certainly pick Depp as Barnabas over Cross, because he A) resembles a vampire and B) looks a lot like Frid with the makeup on.  The bangs, the extended jaw line.  It's fantastic what they did here.

Cross is a great actor and brought a lot to Barnabas.  But he didn't really look the part in those early publicity stills.  And I never got used to how they would dress him - in turtlenecks.  Despite Curtis not being involved in this, I think the look harkens back to the original show more than any other attempt since 1970.

I don't know how the film is going to end up, but the makeup, costumes, and set appear to be fantastic.

I'm glad they're going for this look - at least he's not a long haired, leather-clad, hunky martial artist vampire  :D!

He does!  No one can match Jonathan Frid's craggy look!  HE'S Barnabas!
