I love Elvis's 70's output; The "Walk A Mile In My Shoes" box set introduced me to that era; I was basically a "Fifties only" up until then; one day I saw it on eBay back in 1999 for $19.99 "Buy It Now" and scooped it; a blessing. His voice just got better & better; the songs are just soooo "personal?" I always think, "That's the Way It Is" box set is a must (if I have the title correct?) Favorite songs of E: "I Got Stung,""Little Sister,""American Trilogy,""The Wonder Of You,""Mary in the Morning,""Rubberneckin',""Marie's the Name (of His Latest Flame)", just  a few I am partial to....

IMO Elvis was an early corporate product. He had talent but nothing that "phenom" I like maybe a half dozen of his songs even tho 2 are not HIS.Too much marketing and too many crapass movies.  And he bit the dust too young like so many others. An over consuming over idolized druggie. The "King" died on the Throne trying to take a Royal Dump. >:D

See, that's amazing to me considering the musical "talent" you post here. How many drugged out "musicians" in that lot?? And we won't even cover the vocals. But nobody trashed them, though that would have been exceedingly easy to do, because you liked them and that fact was respected.

To borrow a lyric Elvis was noted for.........."Before you abuse, criticize and accuse, walk a mile in my shoes."
We're all here because we're not all there.

Thanks for that, Scatter. Couldn't have put it better myself.

and he walked far more than a mile in his own shoes/boots in Basic Training. While in the Army he shunned any special treatment and, though conscripted, said "The Army can do whatever it wants with me"...
Whether I like his music or his voice or his movies (I do) or not, nobody can dispute that his effect on pop culture was phenomenal. When it comes to any art form -  music, dance, painting, usually people make sweeping judgements based on whether they like it or not, not based on knowledge of the arts.
What I don't get though is that whole "that thing you just said you liked is crapass" I guess that's what "IMO" is for.

We are talking extremely different styles of music here. Elvis was in the main stream and considered "The King"
We all know that a lot but not all Hard rock and Metal musicians are into partaking. Elvis was suppose to have been kind of a role model as it were.
I feel the same way about him at 50 as I did when I was 18. And just like a lot of todays musical "Stars" Over hyped,IMO.

I have always felt sorry for Presley. It must be a bitch to try to live up to yourself constantly, and at the same time being so famous you had to stay in hiding every day. I think eventually he just got bored with life and gave up.

To that I say, you don't many musicians, personally anyway.

Presley is a phenomenon like no other. I don't know where "role model" comes in, other than he was basically kind, generous and spiritual, and he loved his Mama. So what is wrong with that?

As long as he keeps selling product, he will be hyped. It's the American way. 50,000,000 Elvis Fans Can't Be Wrong.

I'll hook you up with some sympho speed metal. A lot of these guys can shred anything Hendrix did.

Never said there was anything wrong with him as person aside from his over using and getting fat on peanut butter and banana samiches. And yea he could be a helluva generous guy. Near the end he was almost a joke though.

If that's what works for ya go with it. I'd rather listen to Chuck Berry (IMO the REAL King of early R&R),Little Richard, Buddy Holly and hmmm, who was the guy that first played Blue Suede Shoes? Carl Perkins.  And if it makes you guys feel any better I just got ripped on by the wife who has Elvis in her cars CD player. Sure glad we don't commute together. ::)

To this day I really don't understand the whole 'fat Elvis' jokes either.

By today's standard, I wouldn't call the guy fat...

This is EP at his heaviest, and I'll bet half the people reading this are proportionally heavier than this guy. No doubt he had his problems, but your comments are cruel. Don't Be Cruel.

"...if any individual of our time can be said to have changed the world, Elvis Presley is the one. In his wake more than music is different. Nothing and no one looks or sounds the same. His music was the most liberating event of our era because it taught us new possibilities of feeling and perception, new modes of action and appearance, and because it reminded us not only of his greatness, but of our own potential."
-Greil Marcus
Mystery Train, 1975

Elvis was the prototype of a new kind of legend, distinctly American and completely genuine. As Greil Marcus said, before Elvis things were one way; after Elvis, things were different. He left a huge mark on the world.

I'm an aging gym rat that has MULTIPLE joint issues and has lost size and strength. At 50 I am 6'1" and 202 in a pair of shorts. The only thing fat on me is my 36 1/2 inch beer belly from not being able to lift like I could and battling the joint issues. Let's see a video of E.P at this stage just drop and crank out 35 P.U's with his feet elevated on a kitchen chair.

Think about the times. If the world at the time wasn't so damn racial it would have been Chuck or Little Richard. After all that is where R&R started from.

Monster Bob

Actually, it was WELL before Chuck and Richard.
