The horror genre - furthermore, the Hammer Films legacy - has lost a director.

British filmmaker Roy Ward Baker has died at the age of 93.

Although best known for his Titanic film A Night to Remember and his work on The Avengers television series, Baker was a heavy contributor to the fear genre when he cozied up with Hammer for Quatermass and the Pit, The Vampire Lovers, Scars of Dracula, Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde and The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires.

He also directed the horror anthologies Asylum and The Vault of Horror.

Baker was responsible for countless hours of film entertainment--his work for Hammer and Amicus resulted in polished work that gave horror fans a whole wonderful new world of movies to enjoy.  ASYLUM was a favorite of mine--with Peter Cushing in the Weird Tailor story!  And well do I remember sitting in the theatre to see DR. JEKYLL AND SISTER HYDE, thinking there would not be much of interest there, gauging by the silly title.  One darn good movie after al!  Thank you, Mr. Baker, for all you gave us for so many years!
