The Phantom Creep

Wow, thanks everyone for posting all of this great art. There's really some great stuff here.

Meek, your work is just amazing! That piece that belongs to Bob Burns is my favorite.

Frank I love that Apes watercolor. I'm a really big fan of the Apes as well and that is just stunning!!

A question for both of you, what size are most of the ones you've posted here?

    Most of my paintings are small and range from miniatures 1 x 2 inches, 3 x 5 inches, 4 x 6 inches, 5 x 7 and once in a while an 8 x 10. Dr. Pretorious is a 5 x 7. I think small paintings have some quality of intimacy to them.
Having an inherited eye problem makes it challenging to paint; my left eye is permanently out of focus due to a scratch on the very center of the cornea and my right eye sees halos---I call it my "Van Gogh Vision" but I've managed to find away around the fuzzies with a Jerry-rigged sort of cure---a black eye-patch worn half-way over my left eye acts as a light baffle which helps to focus the eye and I've recently found some $2.00 cheapo magnifying specs at a local flea market that let me see the details again when I paint.  Two years ago I had a very bad fright when I woke up without putting artificial tears in my eyes before opening them and peeled a very large chunk of cornea off of my good right eye---exceedingly painful and I couldn't even see to read the phone book to call the eye doctor; for quite a few months thought my painting days were done for but the eye healed well enough. I have "good eye days" and "bad eye days" and try to paint whenever  circumstances allow.  Then there's bouts of depression . . .

Here's one of my "lost" paintings trapped on the faulty computer disk. I suppose I could always contact the owner and ask him to take a photo or a scan of this so I have a better record of the work----the painting lives in Lincoln, NE.
Thanks to Bill Edwards' article about my work in "Scary Monsters" I at least have this glimpse of the "Bride of Frankenstein Tryptich".
Did you know that Dr. Pretorious wore high button shoes? Neither did I until I started to work on his panel.

The Drunken Severed Head

The tryptich is lovely to behold at last.

Depression bouts? Well, depression is a hazard for all imaginative folks , I think-- sometimes it's hard to not to imagine that life could ever so much better than the one we've got, but at the same time it is hard to imagine how we would get there. (And sometimes, it's impossible.)

What else to add I don't know, except that there are many members who like you very much for your personality and character-- even more than they admire your considerable art skill.

Frank: Since the lady in the Creature's arms is wearing a halter top that is made out of handkerchiefs she should be glad that the Creature's evolution left him without a nose.
I do like how you rendered the old boy's skin--he's got a lot of different textures going on at the same time--dull & shiny, wet & dry, smooth & warty.

If my Brother saw this he'd probably have it made into a tattoo.

The black & white sketches I do on old Disney animation paper, which is about 10.5" x 13".  The charcoals and watercolors are similar in size, but my oil paintings can range anywhere from 5" x 7" to 20" x 24".

Since today is Colin Clive's birthday I'd thought I'd share what's probably my favorite painting; it sits framed in a vintage painted glass & chrome art deco frame close to my drawing table--the ivory color of the glass has slashes of mirror on it that looks a bit like lightening.
    Size wise, I think this is 5 x 7.

Great stuff here! Keep it coming!  ;D

I have a few more pieces that I can eventually share, but these are the only two horror-related that I can share as of right now. Both were done for my college illustration course where my professor allowed me to do a series of paintings of horror film and movie villains called "The Rogue's Gallery". Still have to complete the series one day as the class only allowed me to start the series, but time constraints have not obviously allowed me to finish.

Here below are my interpretations in acrylic of Ardeth Bey and a bit of twisted imaginary casting with Claude Rains as Svengali.

Thanks Mike.
These are all acrylics (Vallejo Model colors I usually paint my models with) with some SFX with waterbased oil paints.
Just finished a Wolfman, need to scan him....

Then I am even more in awe! I can't paint in acrylics for anything. I really like your Ygor. You really captured Lugosi in that one. I also really like the first Frankenstein with the windmills behind him. Really, really nicely done. Please post your Wolf Man!

Thanks,
Mike
