"Not exactly" zombies makes me think dead.  The 1940's is too early for walking dead, but not too early for dead dead.

It is a haunting or ghost story?

Not quite but VERY close, in a way ;)
DARK SHADOWS:

David Collins: "Dead people dont just get up and walk around.."

Sarah Collins: "Sometimes they do."

Not quite a ghost...

A demon - or a spirit.

A demon - or a spirit.

The exceptionally talented Erik Weisz would know.

Probably not a demon for the '40's.

A spirit.

I just don't know.  I am certain it is a film I have never seen.

Somebody else has to name this one.

The story deals with spirits, maybe.

Well yeah, I'm thinking spirits or spiritualists/seances.

I just don't know the name and am 95% sure I've never seen it.

You used the prefix ex- in your posts, but that doesn't help me.  Maybe someone else?

Like Dr, X, Mr. X, X, the Unknown, ex-cetera?

(Doesn't help me - I still don't know it.)

Two of those are not '40s movies. (And, amazingly, you have heard of it.)
