The Cantankerous Collector

Does anyone know who the artist for this great cover art is and is the character Mr Hyde or someone else?

The artist is Vic Prezio and was from a photo of a Mr. Hyde makeup, by Dick Smith, done for the Famous Monsters of Filmland Do-It-Yourself Monster Make-Up Hand Book.

Awesome- thanks! Vic Prezio also did the FMF Lugosi Dracula cover where he's a shade of blue if I remember correctly. I buy lower conditioned FMF mags, scan the covers in at a high resolution and photoshop the scuffs and defects out, recreate the text at times and it makes for a nice print for my walls. It takes me forever but it end up looking real nice. I've always loved this cover. Remember when FMF started using photos for their covers? It was around the time of Star Wars and it was horrible. There's nothing cooler than painted artwork!

I think I have all of the known FM cover artists, posted with the FM issue, on my old monster mags blog.

There were a bunch of photo covers in the #80s, but after they started with the SW covers, there were few new cover paintings. Most were reused covers, or old Gogos paintings that had never been used, or movie poster art.

Thank you! I think it's kinda falling apart, though. Been over a decade since I last contributed to it. It was never meant to be an ongoing thing, anyway.

Regardless of the updates you've put together an incredible archive. Just curious have you kept most of what you've collected? All these images make me nostalgic. I unfortunately had moments in life where I had to sell my stuff due to circumstances but that was the past, the little things I pick up here and there I now intend on keeping for a long time.

Since I'm gettin' up there and not wanting my monster mag collection ending up in a dumpster, or burdening someone with the task of liquidating it, I've been selling off the collection for the last couple of years. All of the '60s-'70s mags are already gone. One guy bought several complete runs of '90s-current titles. I need to get back to listing some more stuff on eBay, but all the photographing and listing is boring as heck!  ;D

Ah I totally understand that, nice that you're thinking of others getting joy out of them as well! I'm not a big fan of listing stuff and sending things out either, if I sell anything it's usually on fb marketplace these days.
