Gee, I thought that is what happened, along with tons of other people and critics. According to Hitchcock and co-writer Evan Hunter that was assumed. Even original script had it that way, but being the wacko Hitchcock was, and being his only horror movie, he cut the original ending. Guess he fooled everyone .

That is why the ambiguous ending. But all the clues are there leading to bird domination. Did movie goers think the birds were only there because of Melanie ? Were going to just stop attacking after a few people left the town ?  Really ?  I never thought that, specially seeing where Hitchcock got the movie from and all the hints in it. I always remember the bird lady in the diner saying it would be impossible to kill all the 100 billion plus birds in the world. Food for thought. We are left with our own choices.
