ALWAYS MONSTERING...

Finally scored a Image I Vampiri DVD from 2001.

This has been OOP for awhile. I purchased this new and still sealed from an eBay seller for a great price, and he even shipped it in a large box so it arrived undamaged.  :)

While not technically a horror film if you haven't seen the HBO film "Citizen X" I highly recommend it. The true story of Russia's first serial killer. 52 dead and it took 8 years to catch the killer mainly because of bureaucratic red tape and the fact that those in power believed this could never happen in Russia, a decadent western phenomenon as one put it.  Stephen Rea, Donald Sutherland and Max Von Sydow are incredible in this film. A highly compelling film that I come back to again and again. Available from Amazon for $5.98, DVD full frame only since that's how it was shot.

Yes, That's it. I wonder why the home video release isn't wide screen? It's free to watch with Amazon Prime. I'll have to check and see if it's widescreen there.

I found a review of this movie (on a horror site no less) and they do state it was released on DVD in it's original aspect ratio of full frame. As for the review very high praise from the reviewer and commenters. The acting is phenomenal. Donald Sutherland won the Golden Globe for best supporting actor in 1996 for this film and Stephen Rea won best actor at the 1995 Cairo International Film Festival and Sitges - Catalonian International Film Festival.

I just finished watching the wide-screen version on YouTube.  The image looks beautifully composed for that format.

This film was made just on the cusp of TV's transition from 1.33:1 to 16:9.  I suspect the movie was filmed to be viewed in either aspect.  There are quite a few made-for-TV shows from around then that have since become available on DVD.  Some of them were originally broadcast in 1.33:1 because that was what most households had at the time and so many of them hated the black bars at top and bottom.  Interesting to see that a number of the shows have since been released on DVD in a wider, 1.78:1 format that yields more information than was originally broadcast.

They should have given this DVD a theater-style matting.  Maybe there are licensing complications about altering the "original broadcast" version without paying an additional fee.

Thanks for pointing it out, Gory Glenn.  Good movie with a really great cast.  This should have been released to the theaters.  The acting is very subtle and understated - it would have come across very well on a huge screen.

That all makes sense. Glad you enjoyed the movie. It really should have had a theatrical release. Just ordered "Child 44" based on the same story. Most agree it's not as good as Citizen X but I was curious enough to check it out especially for the 7 bucks the DVD cost.

Here's another one that will be released in time for Halloween this year.

                    An American Werewolf In London - Restored Version - Blu-Ray - 2016

Scheduled for release on Sept. 27, 2016.

Not sure just what is being "restored" about this one.  I have the previous Blu-Ray and the colors are very contrast-y and everyone has too ruddy a complexion.  Hope that is being addressed.  Nurse Alex is a pale-skinned English girl who should not look so desert rat sunburned in the shower scene - and Jack's corpse is so dark that too little detail is visible during his visit to David in the hospital and in the theater scene.

Anywho, here is the eBay listing for pre-orders:

https://www.amazon.com/American-Werewolf-London-Restored-Blu-ray/dp/B01IP2X72W/ref=pd_ys_sa_2644980011_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=3KZDY4F62JY9GA6R33HX

Can't wait for buyers' reviews of this one.  I love this movie.

Maybe she got a tan running around naked in the Outback in WALKABOUT.

As long as she's naked, I shan't complain.  She's naked (and pale) in Equus.

When James Cameron was at Comic Con promoting a 30th Anniversary Blu-Ray edition of "Aliens", he also mentioned two other up-coming projects.

"Terminator 2: Judgement Day" will receive an October 3D theatrical release.

And "Abyss" is targeted for an early 2017 Blu-Ray release - and possible 4K disc release.

I'm holding off for the "Avatar" special restoration. Make those blues even bluer.
