Here's a positively breathtaking performance by Dionne Warwick:

Dionne Warwick - Don't Make Me Over - Live 1963

I like the stark contrast between the young girl so awkwardly stuffed into the formal gown and heels in which she can hardly walk and the raw power of her voice.

The story behind the track is really good too. Hal David and Burt Bacharach had told a young Dionne Warwick that they were working on a song for her, but ended up giving it to another singer. When Dionne demanded to know why, the two hemmed and hawed about how the other girl was better suited for the song in this, that and the other way. Dionne burst into tears at the implied criticism and snapped "Don't make me over, man, accept me for what I am!" Hal David and Burt Bacharach looked at each other with the stunned realization that they'd just found the sentiment they needed to turn their young ingenue into a recording sensation!

;)

She'd never be this good again, because, you see, they did eventually succeed in making her over. Check out this video from just a year later:

Well Hepcat, your list is long.  Way long.  And you quote yourself without acknowledging it regarding DIONNE WARWICK...   ;)

Cool! Here's another of my very favourite girl groups performing their signature hit:
Dixie Cups - Iko Iko (stereo)...
I see you included this on your list... isn't this THE DIXIE CUPS' "signature hit"?
The Dixie Cups - Chapel of Love (Hollywood A Go Go - Dec. 25, 1965)

Anybody remember MELANIE
Melanie-Brand New Key -((Composer Melanie Safka))

Recycle old posts whenever possible I say! It's too tough to think of something new and creative every day.

Yeah, "Chapel of Love" charted a lot higher but "Iko, Iko" is the track I prefer.
