Ever put a low-ball bid on something you were certain you would never win, but "oh what the hell, why not place it just for fun?"  I just did that.

I placed a bid that shot the high bid to an amount less than the ebay next bid increment - about 2½ hrs. before the end of the auction.  So everyone that bid previously knew that I was topped out, and one more increment would best the high bid showing.

But I still got it.

I know this poster is not "perfect", but it is close enough for me.  And I think I got a pretty good deal.

As soon as it arrives, I am heading for the local frame shop to get this thing a home.

Nice piece from a great Sci Fi film IMO.  Should become a centerpiece of your collection.

I got my poster today:

That is just the auction photo - but it is deadly accurate as to condition.

I can't remember having been so thoroughly pleased with a purchase.  Everything about it was right.  Whoever did the linen-backing did a museum-quality job.  The fold lines are almost impossible to see.  The poster looks like it was printed yesterday.  The colors are so deep and rich!  I had no idea it would be SO beautiful in person.  The $201.01 price was better than I could have hoped for.  (An un-backed MM poster has just been listed with a $650 starting bid.)

"The Monolith Monsters" is my favorite 50's Universal-International science fiction movie.  It is also my favorite Jack Arnold movie.  Yeah I know, it was directed by John Sherwood from a script written by others, but Jack Arnold shares story credit.  And the whole thing, from settings to dialog, plays like Arnold wrote & directed it himself.  I'd really like to know how much he influenced this film.

I understand why MM is underrated.  It has monsters in the title, but no monsters in the movie.  I was mildly disappointed when I first saw it in the theater in 1957.  I was 10 that summer.  To me, monsters were roughly people-shaped and had faces.  The Monoliths were an alien force of nature, but they didn't look at all like what I thought a monster should look like.  But the novel creativity of the non-monster monsters approach stuck with me over the years.

I never failed to catch the movie when it played on TV.  When it came to videotape, I snapped it up enjoyed the fact that I could now watch it boadcast-static-free, unedited and uninterrupted by seemingly endless, irritating commercials.  When it came to DVD, I was delighted by the much clearer, steadier picture.

Over time, what started out as a minor disappointment, has developed into a quiet crush, then into a steady love, and finally into a real passion.

I saw all of the Jack Arnold 50's movies as first-run features.  Watching 1950's Universal-International science fiction makes me feel like a kid again - just like the "Stand By Me" Vern look-alike in my avatar.

Today was a great day!

(Think I'll fire up the DVD player.)
