Jeez, lousy deal for you. Who chairs the department now? I'm confused when you say "the company" reorganized. I guess I don't understand how a college is set up, after 7 years as chair you would have been vested , your tenure being irrevocable.
By the way, wasn't familiar with Camille Rose Garcia, very interesting work.

No such thing as tenure where I work. It's not the first time departments have been juggled. The college is in financial trouble, hence the consolidation. The graphic design chair now oversees illustration. My co-workers (including my new "boss", the GD chair) "like me", but that and five dollars will get you a cup of coffee. But, enough about me.
Yea, I first saw Garcia's work in Blab (I think). She's done a book or two. Today I'm going to mix it up with Alex Gray, Mati Klerwein, and Giger (his non-silly stuff IMO).

Have you ever been to the National Museum of American Illustration in Providence, RI?

No, never been to that museum...If I ever get to RI, I'll put it on the itinerary.

Changing gears once again. This is a picture of the overall painting I did for Polar Lights' Three Stooges kits. Since the kits' bases all interconnected I suggested doing one painting and have the covers combine into one overall piece. I thought it would be a good marketing idea to put coupons in each kit. Consumers could send in the three coupons and get a poster of the art. Tom Lowe took it in another direction and sold limited edition prints of the art. I figured it was a way to get someone to purchase all three kits, and as it happened, Curly sold out while Moe and Larry sold fewer.

this painting was a blast to do! I had so much fun putting Stooge references in the heiroglyphics. For example just to the right of Curly's hip you can see Moe giving Lary and Curly an eye poke. Also, on the rock face between Moe and Larry, towards the top there are three ankh, each one with a stylized version of the boys' iconic hair styles... If I remember correctly, there's something like 21 references and jokes in the background.

Chris, that's awesome!! I'd KILL to be able to do the kind of work I see in this thread! Why did the talent fairy have to pee in my gene pool?

Strangely enough, I have a wall with JUST that amount of empty space.

This is the original art  for Polar Light's HALLOWEEN - Michael Myers kit. This job was a hassle, because they didn't want Michael Myers portrayed in a threatening manner, for fear of reprisal from parents or pc groups. HE'S A SLASHER MURDERER, FER GOODNESS SAKES! Anyway, they didn't want the knife raised threateningly. I had another sketch for the cover I liked better, where MM is standing in a doorway as seen from the inside. He would have mostly been in shadow, rim highlighted from street lamps outside. It felt more claustrophobic, but this is the one they chose. To add insult to injury, they felt it was too monochromatic so on the reproduced cover they introduced pastel evening-like lighting across the front of the house and up the steps like it was coming in through a window. Oh well. I also designed the kit, which had the same restrictions.

Great, Chris. The pumpkin is a nice touch.

That's more great stuff, Chris. That's bizarre about the parameters placed on the Halloween thing.

Moonshadow

It's a sad world when a supernatural serial killer can't even hold a knife threateningly. Geez. No wonder today's kids are such wimps.

Thanks guys. Here's the final box in comparison. Increased saturation, the introduced pastel colors, even color in the shadow on the mask. And I never realized until I did this comparison that they compressed the art to make more room for the copy.

Dan, they really didn't know what direction to go with the kit. Tom Lowe (owner of Playing Mantis/Polar Lights) was a real fan of the movie, but was concerned about reaction, so he wanted the character less threatening. I showed them what McFarlane was doing with the action figure - the blood, the intense graphics, etc., but Tom Lowe was adamant. Poor Dave Metzner (Brand Manager, PL) tried all different approaches. I did scores of concept drawings for the kit. They even considered making it a humorous kit, with MM trick-or-treating! In the middle of development Dave left for another job, and his replacement was left with all this in his lap. And then there were the discussions about the cover. And more pages of concepts... it was pretty frustrating. But, I was happy to get the job!
